Ref. 1972 Shadow 1 SRH 13952. Whilst taking off the spare wheel carrier, to clean and paint it, I remembered seeing an article about how the final drive cross-member can fail and how to make a repair, see http://rrtechnical.info/finaldrive/FinalDriveCrossmember.html After scrapping off some underseal there does not appear to be any corrosion, but the article states that it can just shear. A few years ago at a RREC seminar at the clubhouse in the UK we had our cars looked at by the course trainers and they said my car had been fitted with, if I remember correctly, a modified cross-member. I cannot remember exactly what the modification was but certainly looking at the cross-member it does not have the same thick underseal that the rest of the car has. It just seems to be painted black, but I have regularly sprayed wax oil on the underside of the car. The thickness of the cross-member is 0.050 (1.27mm) which is 18 gauge. Looking at the list of chassis modifications I cannot see anything apart from FD cross-member with through bolts (LWB) from chassis No 16928 around June 1973. I would appreciate any thoughts on this issue by you experts out there.   | ||
