Howdy from Texas! Before my question let me offer kudos on this forum. I have finally bought my first Rolls Royce & am learning how CLUELESS I am about these beautiful cars. All part of the fun, though. So.. my Shadow (SRE25780) has some manner of issue with 3 out of 4 power windows (plus the master control on the driver's door!). ANY advice is welcome & appreciated. My primary question, though, is this: After lubricating the Passenger Front channels & discovering both a bad ground & a faulty switch, the window now goes up with great zeal. It then "bounces" off the top of the frame & stays open about 1/8". The blow-ups I have in the service manual do not look like the mechanism I have (cylindrical Lucas motors). How do I adjust the braking on this to keep it from bouncing back down? Thanks much to all!}

Each window motor has a solenoid brake that is adjusted at the factory with shims, you may need to add or remove some of these to get the brake to work correctly |

Can anyone direct me to diagrams / photos of how and where these shims are placed to perform their function? FYI where my service manual indicates a braking solenoid (opposite the electric motor on the pulley / gear mechanism) there is nothing on any of my windows. |

I am currently working to repair a non-functional, near side rear electric window raising mechanism. The window was jammed closed. I am armed RR Manual TSD4200 A&B, which is supposed to cover the model in question. Text in the manual covers the removal of the unit fairly well, except there is no mention of the quaint littler leather strap that holds the top of the mechanisms chain rail. If you don't know about it when the time comes to "manoeuvre the unit out of the door", its hard to understand why the thing will not give, as resistance is not of a nuts and bolts mechanical nature/feel, more of a gremlin touch. The unit I am working on is not like the one shown in the graphics in the manual, in that the chain is exposed, where in the manual it is encased (as pictured in the previous post). I have found a couple of bits and pieces of nuts and bolt and a rubber bush in the door bottom, which is I assume to stop the window at its lowest point. The manual does not offer an exploded view of how this type of unit is supposed to be assembled so I work out where these bits are supposed to go. Is there such a thing available? The motor appears to be OK. Are window lifting mechanisms interchangeable. Will the encased chain type, if I need to and can obtain one replace the open chain type. I know electric windows have been done to death in a swag of forums, but I can't find anything covering the mechanical detail I am looking for. Any advice would be most gratefully received. Cheers Peter

Hi Peter, The only information I have on file that might help is from the spare parts lists for the Shadow and Spirit models - as your car is a very late Shadow II; it is possible it may have the Spirit mechanism fitted. Late Shadow II Parts List: Early Silver Spirit Parts List Hope this helps. |

Further investigation has revealed the following [Electric Window Mechanism Item 4 page S1-9 of TSD4200]: There are two screws which apparently attach the chain channel "steady strap" to the upper part of the window lift channel - only one of this screws has to be removed to detach the strap and free the assembly. My best guess these are located as below:

David, many, many thanks, exactly what I needed. It looks like the only bit I am missing is one of the UB 33830 half round rubber things, which I should be able to manufacture. Cheers Peter |

This is the mechanism and the bits that were lying around in the bottom of the door. I am guessing that the spring is a simple chain tensioner, and that the bolt goes through the chain plate and holds the rubber parts and it together. The rubber bit bottom right is something I have made up from a bit of gas valve and part of my jack pad. I think it should work even though it is not exactly the same. My understanding is that when the rubber meets a resistance i.e. the strike plate, it is sufficient to actuate a stop switch. The black rubber strip, which looks like it has been glued to something and is about 10mm square, I am also guessing, is supposed to fit between the top of the chain rail and the door where the leather strap restrains restrains the rail. David, I note that quality of you parts list graphics are far superior to the ones I have on CD, which are extremely difficult if not impossible to follow. Is the source of these images generally available for purchase. Thanks Peter

David, I have justifiably been taken to task by the provider of my RR manual CDs., (Larry tbird@consultant.com) After taking direction from him, via email, I am now, though embarrassed, able to state that I already in fact have the images that you provided, and excellent they are too. I guess its a bit of a worry if I intend to work on the cars when I can't manage the manual. Cheers Peter

Hi Peter, I received your emails OK but cannot get replies back to you for some reason - have just tried sending one direct rather than through the forum to "lyn****" so hopefully this is still current. You should receive a package in the mail sometime this week providing Australia Post do not send it by mail steamer from the Manning River around the coast and up the Murray River!! Peter - email did not go through so could you please update your email address in your member's profile on the Forum - thanks David (Message edited by david_gore on July 16, 2006) |
