Well, I just viewed a real "Drive-In B Horror Film" made in 1972, and to my great surprise the "monster" turns up driving a 1960's Silver Cloud, white. He's the local "rich guy" who becomes a werewolf on full moons in a small Lousiana town, so I guess they needed a car to go with his big plantation house. Film is "Moon of the Wolf" starring David Janssen. Got it for $1 at a Dollar Tree store. About what it was worth, but fun to see the RR show up.

We had an episode of Top Gear here recently where Jeremy Clarkson drove a Silver Shadow into a school swimming pool that he was supposed to be officially opening. The only saving grace was that he made it clear beforehand that it was terminally rusty, and I guess the physical damage to usable components would have been minimal, unlike that totally stupid tv ad a few years ago where a Shadow was wantonly destroyed by hurling it into the air by a variation on the old Roman catapult. Doors, grille, boot lid etc were all totally wrecked. I will not name the perpetrators of this vandalism as they do not warrant even that minimum amount of publicity.

I remember years ago an add for the Chrysler Galant in which it & a Rolls Royce Phantom (both black in colour) are seen driving in a motorcade. A voice over is describing the motorcade when the Galant accelerates & the voice over says the official party is speeding away. The point of the add is that the V.I.P's are in the Galant & not the Rolls Royce.

Does anyone remember a Benson & Hedges commercial from the early '70s where a couple in their Silver Cloud III Mulliner drophead were stopped crossing a border for smuggling "gold" (B&H gold-pack cigarettes, that is)? Very amusing. |

For what its worth my SS1 was used briefly in the cricket scene with parked cars paned out around the boundry. The film was the Browning Version with Albert Finney, one of our greatest actors with Greta skretcher? maybe, memory fails me. |

Last week on TV was re-programed the classic film "The Thomas Crown Affair", with Steve McQueen and Faye Dunaway in wich the millionaire drives a Mulliner Park Ward 2-Door Silver Shadow in dark blue (or black...) All the film was a really nice example of the age, costumes and look and feel of the time in wich this car was designed. After seing it i am more convicted about its atemporality (is it said so in english?? if not, SORRY!) |

In a recent episode of the t.v show 'William & Mary" I noticed a very nice Rolls Royce Hearse. It was either a Silver Cloud or a Phantom.

Here's an oddball one for you: the 1966 film "Arabesque" with Gregory Peck and Sophia Loren features 4AF10, design 8292 by Hooper on the Duke of Gloucester's Phantom IV. Perhaps the only time a Phantom IV was used in film or television? Anyway, lots of interesting shots of the car in this highly entertaining film. |

Not strictly a R-R/B automobile film but an absolutely essential inclusion. A very realistic portrayal of Sir Henry Royce committing Rolls-Royce to the production of the Merlin aircraft engine appears in the movie "Spitfire" starring Leslie Howard and David Niven. This is a classic British B&W film based on the life of R.J. Mitchell the designer of the Spitfire and is an absorbing story that will surprise you with the events that occurred. The actor playing Sir Henry is George Skillan. I picked this up in 10 movie value pack "War" released by Payless Entertainment Ltd catalogue number PEL10DVD07 about 12 months ago. I am surprised the film "The Yellow Rolls Royce" has not been mentioned - this shows why curtains were fitted to the rear compartment of pre-WW2 vehicles. I also recall being told that "The Great Race" apparently featured AX201 as the hero's car disguised as a fictional make and the mascot has distinct "Spirit of Ecstasy" heritage. Can anyone confirm this for me please? |

Hello David. I thought "The Yellow Rolls-Royce" would naturally have been mentioned, which is why I left it out! As to AX201 appearing in "The Great Race" that is incorrect. It actually appeared in "Those Magnificent Men In Their Flying Machines" with Robert Morley. Also, Mr Morley was seen driving a Silver Cloud II in the dark-humour film from the same era, "The Loved One" -- a satire on Forest Lawn Mortuaries. John Gielgud was priceless as a cadaver ... |

There are good shots of various RR/Bs in several of the BBC Miss Marple series (the 1970s-80s series with Joan Hickson). They Do It With Mirrors, Nemesis, At Bertram's Hotel, and especially A Pocketful of Rye, in which an R-Type is featured in a sort of chase scene of several minutes. The bad news is that it ends with the Bentley on its side - the good news is that the interior shot is of an Austin or Morris dashboard and split windscreen! These are all available as video tapes & quite often on eBay. Mernon LSJF72 |

Pursuant to Miguel Garcia's post from January regarding the original "Thomas Crown Affair" the car featured was a Brewster Green MPW Shadow coupe, with the inner headlamps being Marchals. The scene where Mr Crown drives home with the loot in the boot, and parks in his courtyard was actually coincidental ... if you'll recall, just as he reaches the door to his home, he turns around and glances admiringly at the car. This was actually a test shot to see how Steve McQueen could handle the character. He was told by Norman Jewison, the director, that Thomas Crown was "a man who drives a Rolls-Royce, and is used to it." It was so convincing that it was kept in the film. Enough said! |

David Gore's allusions regarding the fitment of blinds to the rear compartment of Rolls-Royces brought back a very old memory involving the adult industry with Rolls-Royce. It would be in the early seventies when the dictums of the long standing God botherers league were finally being over-ridden and Governments realised that they had to actually get involved in controlling the visual productions that were pouring onto the market. And so censorship became an industry in itself. Videos were the main material for the censors and it was these that the hapless new employees had to view, classify and rate as either an 'X' rated production or not classified at all. The 'successful' videos were then catalogued and listed in that most august publication The Commonwealth Gazette. Along with proclamations of Acts, promotions of public servants, appointments of very senior judges and mouthings by stautory officers exercising their powers, were listings headed 'Audio visual productions submitted for classification'. So having just read that His Excellency the Governor General Lord Reginal Quiverchin Throsdyke-Morley KCMG KVO MC DSO is pleased to appoint etc etc etc, one turned the page and here were the lists which with hindsight probably should have been uncut.(You will remember the penchant some women's magazine had of inserting sealed magazines in their publication because the subject therein might offend the senses of the less hardy). The titles were completely unedited and THAT word frequently occurred - you know, the acronym for finest universal cleaner known, along with blunt references to various parts of both sexes' anatomy - it was really all too much. But list them they had to do! One edition actually listed Rolls-Royce Volume 1. This was as incongrous as a listing for 'Preferred Methods of Newt Strangling in the Southern Hemisphere'. But not only was it listed, out came more editions with successive volume numbers! Eventually, with large overcoat on and hat pulled down I managed to view one of these masterpieces. The 'plot' involved very comely wenches touring around in a Silver Shadow (which then was a very revered current model) and picking up hapless males and seemingly attempting to demonstate the complete known 132 methods of sexual congress in the sedan. (This did explain why the front seats will not lie right down - it wasn't an oversight I was assured!) When the ladies ran out of clients to demonstate their talents they desported them selves on over and under the car further displaying their talents. One lady in particular had a penchant for using the Sirit of Ecstacy in a manner no gynaecologist would ever attempt but successful she was. The real enthusiasts of yesteryear were aghast it was likened to printing full colour renditions of the Mona Lisa on toilet paper. But nothing happened - absoluely nothing. In 1980 I was brought to Crewe by Rolls-Royce for a week to work on copyright infringements. The staff were very gracious and fairly proper although not without a flexible sense of humour. Eventually I could restrain myself no longer and quietly asked the group whether they were aware of the 'Rolls-Royce' series of pornographic videos. All eyes fixed on me and I was told in the most confidential way that not only had all fourteen copies been sighted and purchased but all had been viewed by the Board. After apparently a lot of 'Harrumpps' etc it was decided that this was one area best left alone. I suppose the Board's decision is hidden in the Foundation's annals but I wonder where the videos are? |

For the innocent and unsullied I recommend the 1967 Disney movie The Gnome Mobile, currently available on DVD. The eponymous vehicle is a 1930 Rolls-Royce Phantom II (possibly a Brewster sedancalette?) that features prominently throughout the movie. If no-one can provide full details on the specific car in question I'll be very disappointed. |

If I remember correctly, a few years ago I was watching an episode of "Hogan's Heros". There was a shot of some high ranking officer arriving in a staff car.I am shure that the staff car was a Rolls Royce complete with Nazi markings! The shot of the car was very quick. I would say that the producer was hoping that viewers would take the car for a Mercedes Benz.

Does anyone remember the 1972 film "Gold" with Roger Moore and Ray Milland? There is a memorable, albeit, unfortunate scene where a Silver Shadow saloon meets its demise, finally going over a cliff after being stoned and generally thrashed. Ray Milland was seen in an early Park Ward Phantom V 7-passenger limousine. |

I think our Shadow (SRH20833) may have been used in the Ronan Keating video for "The way you make me feel". As far as we can tell it was the one dumped in the river which he was dancing on. Jon, this is most curious. I should imagine that an analysis of the water from the river in question would help. Certainly any car that had been dumped into a river would hold moisture -- then you could compare the river water analysis with that taken from the moisture that would be evident in your car. Just a thought ... |

This video was made about 8-10 years ago I think and since then the car has been dried out, rebuilt, and shipped to Australia. But this is what I can tell you about my car: It was originally light blue in colour, with probably a light beige interior and no front headrests. At some point in its life it has been immersed (probably in fresh water as if it was salt water there wouldnt be much left to examine by now) up to the top of the dash. During this immersion a light coating of whiteish chalky mud has found its way into every part of the car (and is still there in many places). This mud is very fine and has managed to find its way even into screw heads, and almost any part of the car (inside or out) that you remove and examine will have some of this mud present. After this immersion it was probably left to sit damp for a while as surface rust is present in anything metal and inside all steel panels. This rust is present (as is the mud) even in places like underneath the glove box and seat hinges, inside the armrests and right throughout all the seat springs and frames. All the cotton insulation on the wiring behind the dash is rotten (or missing). Probably after the immersion, the following occurred: Someone removed and replaced all the switches and instruments, making sure to tag all the wires with masking tape for easy assembly. The tags are still there, and given that most of the wiring behind the dash is black (thanks to the loss of its covering) this was a sensible move. Some switches were replaced with non genuine units some of which still have GBP price stickers on them. All the seats were retrimmed in beige vinyl and aftermarket headrests were added to the front seats. The Hessian coverings underneath the seats were not replaced however and this gives a great view of the rusty internals when you take the seats out. All the carpets were replaced with thin aftermarket items. All the wood was replaced with non matching and dodgy wood probably from 4 or 5 different cars. The rear door waist rails are from front doors and have been cut down to fit and new holes drilled for the locking button. Even the rear mirrors were replaced by the look of it, probably because the wood was rotten. About 20 Kilos of body filler was strategically applied, the rear passenger door was replaced with a white one from another car, the car was painted pink (they often painted over the residual mud in areas such as by the door hinges), and a somewhat dodgy vinyl roof was fitted. Small rust holes in the floors (which are very thin) were repaired by sticking small squares of carpet underlay to them with tar and painting over with tar spray. At some stage the drivers side rear suspension, spring, and probably the hub were replaced with an assembly from a different car. Also the front discs were replaced with earlier non vented units and extra pads were fitted to act as spacers so they would work in the later calipers. All the hubcaps were also lost at some stage as we bought it with aftermarket plastic ones fitted. So what we have is a blue car that was flooded by freshwater containing light chalky mud, probably in England. The roof was probably extensively creased and stretched at some stage (hence fitting a vinyl roof to make covering the damage easier), and after recovery the car was probably sent to a scrap yard where some parts were removed before it was rebuilt by someone who used pretty much whatever they could get their hands on to make a saleable car. Not much proof by any means but when you watch the video it really does look like our car, and the damage to the car and the swirling light river mud around it really does make me wonder. I didn't pay too much for it but the last owner spent a fortune on repairs which included replacing the front brake discs. I've continued to upgrade it and now have a decent, if rather rusty car. I have another body and complete interior plus have replaced all the dodgy wood with a matching set and put 4 hubcaps on. When I change everything over to the new body it will be a really decent car, it's a good thing that I enjoy restoring cars though. At the very least this is a cautionary tale about the sort of lengths people will go to to bodge up a Rolls and sell it for a quick buck. |

A maroon Phantom V (or VI) makes a brief appearance in the Shirley MacLaine film, Mrs. Winterbourne (1996). Grace Winterbourne (Shirley) is the matriarch of a long established Boston Family. She sends her chauffer Paco (Miguel Sandoval) in the RR to pick up her new daughter-in-law, Connie (Ricki Lake) from the train station. Connie is far from a well established family. When Connie sees the car, the conversation goes as follows: Connie: What's this? Paco: This is a Rolls-Royce. Connie: Wow, that's like the Cadillac of automobiles, huh? Paco: No, the Mercedes-Benz is the Cadillac of automobiles. THIS is a ROLLS-ROYCE. This piece of dialogue is worth the price of admission. Leho Proos SXC485

The wonderful 2004 film 'Sideways' had a Silver Cloud wedding car. There was a memorable episode of 'Keeping Up Appearances' from the BBC wherein the perenially social-climbing Hyacinth Bucket (pronounced "bouquet") persuades her long-suffering husband Richard to test-drive a Silver Spur, and they end up sneaking it off the dealer lot, driving it over hill and dale with Hyacinth trying to attract the notice of her social superiors. The denouement arrives in the form of the police arresting her in front of a Stately Home for stealing the car. I also remember the series 'Jeeves and Wooster' frequently showed Rolls-Royces of the 1920's and 30's although Bertie Wooster himself drove a sporty Jaguar roadster. Can't forget 'Arthur' with John Gielgud chauffering Dudley Moore about. There was a film with Rock Hudson made in 1961, 'Come September', in which he played an American playboy with a villa in Italy. He drove a beautiful Silver Cloud Mulliner Drophead Coupe. On the current HBO series 'Entourage' an over-the-hill Hollywood producer is played by Martin Landau. When he pulls up in a white Silver Spur, the young smart-ass talent agent Ari Gold takes a look at the car and says, "what, did you mug Liberace on the way over here?" (I almost choked laughing because the car looked identical to my own.) These are off the top of my head, but I'm sure I'll think of more!

I watched the 2 part series "The Vanished Prince" on the A.B.C. a couple of weekends ago. It's the story of Prince John, the youngest son of King George V & Queen Mary, who died as a teenager. The Royal Car was a Silver Ghost.A bit of a mistake as in those days the Royal Family always used Daimlers.

Splendid, Richard! I was just remembering this particular video only yesterday. Now, how's this for obscurity: does anyone remember the early '70s film "Gold" with Roger Moore and Ray Milland? Milland was driven about in an early Park Ward Phantom V. One of the most memorable scenes, however, was the torture and destruction of a very new (at the time) Shadow. It eventually goes off a cliff and ends in flames. I remember seeing that film on a 747 flight to Hong Kong. Hated it then, and still do now. |

John, That must have been in 1974 or so, with Roger Moore and Susannah York if I recall. If it's the same film, the theme was to flood a goldmine to rig the gold markets. Lets find some pictures (but not of the crash) ! |

I was watching the Australian mini series "Anzacs" the other night on DVD. I noticed a Silver Ghost tourer being used in a number of scenes. Interesting to note that a lot of armored cars in World War One were based on the Silver Ghost Chasis. I have heard that a number of Silver Ghosts Were also used as ambulances during this war.

There is an article about the R-R armoured cars on the RROC[Australia] website. The following link should take you there: www.rroc.org.au/library/sg_ac.html I understand one of this vehicles still exists but I am not certain if it is an original or a replica. |

I have a fond, if rather vague memory of the late Alan Clarke standing next to his Silver Ghost, a former WW1 staff or armoured car around five years ago. The television program was covering a tour somewhere in Europe, possibly the Alps, and AC patted the bonnet of his Ghost saying "The engine has never been apart, there is 1917 sludge in that sump" |

also some great shots and driving scenes of corniche II and faboulous 600 Grosser Benz in '10' with Dudley Moore and Bo Derek. It was a great film too! What about Stanley Kubricks 'Eyes wide Shut' Spirit II or III I think they use in this one. One of my favourite actors, Michael Gambon is chauffered around in an Arnage in 'Layer Cake'. |

The film Gosford Park has a wonderful shot of an early Ghost (?) with the horizontal radiator slats in the opening scene. The film is worth watching just for the props alone. I also came across this amazing photo essay of a 1921 Ghost -Chassis 73JG; Engine 0483 - which is currently for sale for approximately the national debt of a mid-sized country. It's on some sort of Photobucket type website and is 5 pages of extremely lovingly detailed shots. Enjoy. Jeff http://gallery.me.com/richcharess#100259/P1020415&bgcolor=black |

Two quite forgettable films aired here in Hong Kong recently; they were only saved by two unforgettable cars: "The Second Best Secret Agent In The Whole Wide World" (1965) with Silver Wraith Freestone & Webb 3171/A touring limousine; and "Kiss The Girls And Make Them Die" (1966) with Silver Wraith Park Ward 703 touring limousine. Dreadful films, but delightful cars. Unfortunately put through the usual movieland abuse. |

Well done, Mark! You're absolutely right; the exterior is a Cloud III and the interior (rear compartment) is a Phantom V HJM-PW 7-passenger limousine. Just to confuse things even further, the shots taken of the chauffeur behind the wheel, are once again of a Silver Cloud III. Top marks to you! |

Some of we Brits may recall 2 or 3 episodes of the weekly police drama "Frost" starring David Jason when he renewed a 'friendship' with a one time lady of the night. In the narrative she had 'married well' and been rewarded with her late husband's fortune on his death - part of which was a Rolls Royce (I think it was a late Spirit) which she loaned to him while his Volvo 245 was being repaired. Just this evening there was a plethora of weird and sometimes wonderful Rolls Royces shown in a program on BBC4 about the love affair that the various Maharajas of India had with the marque. Unfortunately it is estimated that, of the 8000 odd cars that were exported to the continent, over half have been scrapped, a quarter re-exported to Europe and a few mouth-watering examples have merely disappeared. Some of the facts are amazing: Certain Princes were known to buy a half dozen RRs at a time; coachwork modifications included one just to transport a local cricket team to away matches; a 'Throne Car' to match any palanquin in oppulence; paintwork alledged to contain crushed pearls to give extra lustre; possibly the first handicapped enabled factory car with all foot controls mirrored by hand controls for a Prince who was born paralysed from the waist down; one Maharaja was allegedly so incensed at being kept waiting at a London RR showroom that he left and sent his Major Domo back to buy every car in the place which he then sent back home and had them converted into dustbin lorries!; and more! Sadly it all came to an end when Nehru removed the power of the Maharajas in the late 50's and they lost most of their income. Rolls' became so embarrassing that they could exchange hands for as little as 25 - at today's rates! One titled couple were even given a '20' on the proviso that they drive it back to Blighty. In the event it was only driven the first 650 miles - including the full length of the Khyber Pass - before it was finally loaded onto a ship for the final couple of thousand miles. In the mid 1970's a law was passed to prevent "the loss of India's motoring heritage" that outlawed the export of what we would call classic cars. Unfortunately it has not resulted in all of these cars receiving the attention they deserve and all too many are quietly mouldering away in private collections, museums and even lean-to's with just a tarpaulin for protection against the elements. |

In Belgium we have a TV commercial for the Euromillions lottery that features a heavily "pimped" Silver Cloud. I always thought it would be a fake or that it was done using computer simulation. Unfortunately the car is very real and I saw it being driven around on several occasions. Benoit

Ok gentlemen, you're forcing me to jump into this fray! How about 'Charlie Bubbles' with Albert Finney and Liza Minelli? Lovely 60s British film with a Sand coloured Silver Cloud III H.J.Mulliner drophead featured prominently. Also, see The Beatles' Magical Mystery Tour to see my old Silver Cloud III James Young LWB saloon, CEL 47.

Gentlemen, I recently watched an epsiode of "Columbo" where Ray Milland played the most urbane and civilised of villains, driving a Bentley S2 Continental HJ Mulliner 2-door coupe. Now that's rare! And, apart from the moustache, the flared pants, half-buttoned shirts and other forgettable early 70s pastiche,it was fun seeing Jason King driving, depending on episode, a Bentley S2 Continental Flying Spur or sometimes an S2 Continental James Young 4-door saloon. |

Not TV or films, but this Spirit was in the UK news today. Moderator's Comment: In-store security video of the car coming through the shopfront was shown on the 7 network news - very lucky that no-one was injured given the speed of the vehicle. The driver kept his foot on the accelerator after the debris brought the car to a stop as considerable tyre smoke from the rear wheels was visible on the video. Here are some obscure RR appearances. The first is AMB1F, the RR Ltd factory demonstrator, as seen in numerouss adverts of the time, making an appearance in the opening titles to "The Power Game" with Patrick Wymark: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J4F_AS72TkA&feature=related The second, is a rather amusing bit from "Paul Temple" with Francis Matthews, and a cameo appearance from a Humber Super Snipe (the footage starts at 3:14): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IrfHIewSDa8&feature=related |

Rob - Good on you, and your car filmed beautifully! Keith, if you visit http://www,theavengers.tv/forever you will see the corrections I made regarding the cars a few years back. In Mother's case, the car in question was a Bentley Continental Koren-designed drophead coupe. Without chassis number, it is difficult to ascertain whether it is an S2 or an S3; it has S3 headlamp arrangement but S2 signal and running light arrangements! Cheers |

Recently one of the UK cable channels has been reshowing episodes of the series "The Professionals" about the adventures of a team of investigators from the fictional "CI5" section of the police force. Incidentally the leader of this team was played by Gordon Jackson who had previously played the character of the head butler, Mr Hudson, in the long-running drama, "Upstairs, Downstairs". The other 2 characters, known as Bodie and Doyle, were played by Lewis Collins and Martin Shaw respectively. In this episode "Everest Was Conquered As Well" we see a silver gray Series 1 Silver Shadow in long shot against the background of a Stately Home somewhere in the Home Counties. We later see it (just the grill, bonnet, windscreen and mascot) in the garage of a murdered retired police officer - thus proving that he was corrupt! The number plate is never visible and the car is not seen again having only been on camera for no more than 30 seconds overall. |

Hello all, I watched a rather entertaining and surprisingly afronting movie last week - Kick Ass. Movie line aside, the villain was ferried around in a black current model Phantom and even had a sizable Spirit of Ecstacy on his office desk. http://imcdb.org/vehicle_307348-Rolls-Royce-Phantom.html![](http://au.rrforums.net/forum/messages/30/10759.jpg) |

There are at least two, if not 3, in the James Bond film "License to Kill" with Timothy Dalton playing the eponymous hero. The film opens with Bond and Felix Leiter being driven to the latter's wedding in a white Silver Cloud. Later in the film Bond is driven from his hotel to the bank and casino (both owned by the villain of the piece) in a pale Blue Shadow 2. It's difficult to be certain, but I think it was a silver grey over baby blue livery. Shortly after that he's being chauffeured around in a pure baby blue Shadow 2 with 'Q' acting as his driver. I could be wrong, but I think there's at least an appearance of a Rolls and/or Bentley in every Bond film. Certainly one (Phantom?) is pushed into a lake with Bond, this time played by Roger Moore, in the back seat (unconscious) and a dead Patrick MacNee in the front in "Moonraker". |

Well done,Jan and unfortunately I haven't seen A Licence To Kill! But, I do recall the Silver Cloud in A View To A Kill, and noticed that the car they pushed into a lake was actually a Bentley with RR grille. How timely for you to have brought this up, as today 6th February is the charming Patrick Macnee's 88th birthday! ᢍ Kung Hei Fat Choy! John Shostrom Hong Kong |

On UK TV there is a current series of adverts for 'Compare the Market dot com' with a Meerkat ranting about people confusing the site with his own - 'Compare the Meerkat dot com'. In the latest episode there are a couple of long shots of what I believe to be a Phantom 2 or 3. |

Wheeler Dealers A must see is the 2 parts of Wheeler Dealers on Discovery Turbo Channel where they get an 83 Bentley Mulsanne from Flying Spares in the UK for 3000 GBP. Features a great rejuvination of a very worn interior and a bare metal respray. Worth watching. See http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P4dbl8Dz2L8 for further details. |

More... Just saw a film called The Next Man starring Sean Connery. About OPEC etc. etc. But, a lovely short boot Silver Dawn driven at speed, through the Irish countryside, by the evil female character. Why is it that the Mother Theresa character never drives a R-R at speed?

Waiting as I am for SRH20280 to come back from the body shop (I took the plunge and succumbed to the temptation while she was off the road for 2 months anyway to go the full-monty paint job. My grandmother is currently on sale on ebay -honestly, she'll look positively regal in your back seat)... Trawling the web to learn the basics of car painting I came across an Alpha Romeo forum topic which links to a National Geographic series called "Ultimate Factories" which shows how the Rolls Royce of factory finishes is applied: at Goodwood. I've started at episode 2 (#1 is the usual bumf) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NWmPrPuvYwg |

Rolls Royce Silver Ghost to star on silver screen At a recent announcement on the movie, Scorcese said, When I read the story of Silver Ghost I was mesmerised. I immediately thought that this was a picture that had to be made. And when I was asked to come aboard as a producer alongside Richard Attenborough and Anthony Haas, I didnt hesitate for a moment. Should be interesting - I wonder who's going to doing the casting for the star vehicle. http://www.caradvice.com.au/173501/rolls-royce-silver-ghost-to-star-on-silver-screen/ |

The latest Johnny English film features a unique 2011 model Rolls Royce Phantom. Apparently the car was originally designed to take the new 9.0 litre V16 motor, but only 3 or 4 such engines were built before they decided to fit the now 'standard' V12 lump. However Rowan Atkinson is a complete 'petrol head' ('gear head' in US parlance) and having heard about the engine he persuaded them to fit the original design lump to the one used in the film. Being a canny fellow he had a 'rider' included in his contract for the film which meant that after filming was completed and 'in the can' the car became his property! Nice work - if you can get it ![](http://au.rrforums.net/forum/clipart/smile.gif) |

Sorry everyone, many of those TV shows and films are comparatively ancient for someone born in 1978. Besides the pimp-mobiles in most of the current day Afro-Rap videos I've spotted Royces in many places; First to mind is advertising mustard ("Pardon me, do you have any Grey Poupon?") which has been parodied by the mustard manufacturer along side privateers. Youtube is full of good examples and the original advertisements. The Grey Poupon advert was brought back to fame in the movie Wayne's World where an AMC Pacer which had a flame-job and red rope licorice dispenser in the roof was full to the brim with five head-banging teenagers who amuse themselves by requesting said mustard from a gentleman in a white Silver Cloud at traffic lights. A white Silver Cloud had a cameo in the movie trilogy "Back to the Future". Marty McFly makes a decision in a couple of ways surrounding an accident with it. I am glad someone mentioned 10 with Dudley and Bo. I can't recall clearly but I think there is a brown Shadow or Shadow II in the movie "Night Shift" with Henry Winkler, Michael Keaton and Shelly Long. I think it was in a car chase and cornered hard enough for the hubcap to fly off. I'm happy to be corrected on this. |

I don't know if it's already been mentioned, but I recall a Shadow/Spirit bodied Rolls being entered into the illegal race in one of the 'Gumball Rally' films. During the film it was supposedly being driven cross country by a youth to deliver it back to its owner who had coincidentally relocated from the area of the start line to near the finish line. Being tempted by the posted prize money he enters the race and pushes the car to the limit - even during a sandstorm while crossing the desert - which completely destroys the paintwork! Along the way he picks up a rather 'dipsy' flower child who so mesmerises the owner when the car is finally delivered that he says "Never mind; I was going to have it resprayed anyway". Not being either of the film's stars he doesn't win, of course. |

In the opening scenes of the musical "Mama Mia" there are a couple of cameo shots of a Caribbean Blue Silver Spirit (Spur? Wraith?) with Pierce Brosnan in the back. |

Hello, I am new to this discussion forum, and would like to extend my warmest holiday greetings to everyone. I have been an enthusiast for a few years now, and have recently been trying to find information about the appearance of the Rolls-Royce in motion pictures and on television. Some of the film titles that I've already encountered include: "Rolling Home" (1926), "City Lights" (1931), "The Red Shoes" (1948), "Goldfinger" (1964), "The Yellow Rolls-Royce" (1965), "The Gnome-Mobile" (1967), "Gumball Rally" (1976), and "Grand Theft Auto" (1977). I suppose the most notable television appearance of the vehicle is the short-lived series "Burke's Law" (mid-1960s), though it made an auspicious appearance in the 1972 Masterpiece Theatre broadcast "Mr. Rolls and Mr. Royce." I am curious as to what some of your favorite (or least favorite) films and television shows featuring Rolls-Royce automobiles are. What is the most painful moment in a film (perhaps, for many of us, it would be fifteen minutes into the 1970 Mick Jagger film "Performance," when a character pours acid on the transcendent auto)? Any viewing suggestions will be greatly appreciated! Thank you in advance. Best, David Scott Diffrient |

Long time ago I dealt in Vintage RR's in England at the Jack o' Lantern, Romsey, Hampshire. Those days and the cars we handled can be seen and enjoyed on the website link: http://oliford.portland.co.uk/published/car112.html We supplied Rolls and Bentleys to many films. Rolls-Bentley, Van den Plas four door drophead, Reg. No.DLD 273.." The Greengage Summer" with Kenneth Moore, Susannah York, Dannielle Darrieux, Jane Asher, etc. Then Rolls Phantom 2, Chassis 74MY, car 166.html on the website.,RR 20hp Reg PD 9610, "Me and the Colonel", Danny Kaye. All the Silver Ghosts in "Lawrence of Arabia", cars are on the site, start with SG chassis 34PE, then 68RM, 82EM and 18.NE, Phantom 1, Reg. JRY 999 was featured in " She'll Have to Go" Barbara Windsor. We enjoyed all those adventures and can tell many a story. |

Nineth Gate starring Johnny Deep, 2001? It's got a few scenes with a silver silver shadow, one was a shoot from inside the car looking out from the driver seat showing the flying lady on the bonnet while Johnny Deep is driving it. |

A few other movies with RR's would include: "Noble House" 1988 has numerous shots of Phantom V ( if I remember right) and a Shadow including a nice long drive with front seat view of Spirit. This movie was filmed in Hong Kong and Macau. Others that comes to mind besides "Goldfinger" are James Bond's "The World Is Not Enough" white Shadow in this one, "License To Kill" also Shadow that "Q" drives, "A View To A Kill" I believe a Silver Cloud and of course "The Man With The Golden Gun" has a few shots of the green Shadows belonging to The Peninsula Hotel - Kowloon.

I just saw a music video on MTV featuring stunning footage of the new Phantom. The music is terrible though! I did not get the artists name. The latest Spiderman movie also features great footage of a black Rolls-Royce limo, based on the Cloud I think. |

Dudley Moore's films 10 and Arthur were both splashed with Rolls-Royces and Bentleys. In 10, he crashed his Corniche Convertible head on into a police car when he saw Bo Derrek. In Arthur, I seem to remember his mother was chauferred around in a Hooper Empress Line Silver Wraith. At the fancy dress party, there were many flashes of assorted R-Rs and Bs. Even Back to the Future flashed a parked long-boot Silver Dawn or R-Type. The number of Clouds and Shadows crashed in movies is innumerabls as it always seemed to be a popular stunt. |

BLOWUP from 1966 with David Hemmings had a nice convertible. I'm not sure of the model. I think it is a custom body on a Cloud III chassis. Anyone know? The Rolls Royce actually belonged to Jimmy Savile and used to be white but was painted black for the film. |

GOSFORD PARK, from circa 2000, features some delightful scenes of an early (two wheel brake) RR 20hp opendrive limousine. It was yellow, with a polished bonnet, if I remember correctly. The car features quite prominently gently transporting its elderly lady occupant to an elaborate party, in a period setting of a Stately Mansion. The afterdark activities between the Gentry and Hired help is a bit eye opening, but tastefully done. Enjoy

In the back of your local video shop in the B grade comedy section.. you'll find The Movie "Cannonball Run" from the mid 80's featuring Klinger from "Mash", he plays an arab sheik's son, organising the race in a White S Shadow. Then the follow up Cannonball Run 2 , the Sheik enters the race in a early White S Spirit, chauffuer and all !! In both movies the sheik has all the money in the world, and what a good choice of cars !! Mark |

Hello Everyone! If you really want to see a Rolls-Royce in a film, try "One Deadly Owner" about a possessed Silver Cloud III. The movie itself is forgettable, but the car is wonderful. This same car was used in several episodes of "The Avengers" and in fact that programme had many nice Rolls-Royce throughout the various series. "Blow Up" featured a Silver Cloud III Mulliner-Park Ward convertible, and "Noble House" featured a long wheelbase Silver Shadow and the Phamtom VI. "Withnail & I" has an ex-Nubar Gulbenkian Silver Wraith (currently for sale at Frank Dale & Stepson in the UK) and, are you ready, "Arabesque" with Gregory Peck and Sophia Loren has ... a Phantom IV! Possibly the only time a Phantom IV was used in a film? I could name tons of films with RR in them, but will let you all go now. |

John, I'm familiar with most of the films, but haven't come across "One Deadly Owner"...the idea of a possessed RR is probably not that foreign to most owners chasing the elusive gremlin in later electronics-packed cars! Is it available on video or DVD as far as you know? GN. |

Hi Gordon, Somewhere in my video piles, I have a copy of One Deadly Owner which starred Donna Mills and Jeremy Kemp. The TV Movie is terribly dated but I loved the car. If I find it and if it hasn't degraded over the years, I'll see if someone can copy it for you. Rob |

Hello Gordon and Robert: I know the film is available in the US from Eddie Brandt's Saturday Matinee in North Hollywood, California. They would likely suplicate it for you on DVD. Yes, the film is terribly dated, witness those wild bell-bottoms! Donna Mills doesn't quite pull of the neurosis thing as well as Doris Day in "Midnight Lace" and a very young Jeremy Brett seemed anything but the Sherlock Holmes of later years. But loads of detailed shots of that Cloud III -- even the handbook. Yes, the idea of a possessed RR - especially a later Spirit -- is not alien to me! I had any number of electrical gremlins on my 1982. Cheers! |

A little closer to home, ergo Broken Hill NSW. The 2002 film "Dirty Deeds' starring Brian Brown, was parly filmed in that area. A Rolls Royce Silver Cloud as being owned by a grazier, featured under most unlikely circumstances. I am almost certain that the car was one of those owned by the Broken Hill artist and enthusiast Pro Hart. Peter |

There are a couple of episodes in the A&E/BBC Miss Marple series that feature an R-Type ('The Body in the Library') and a Dawn ('They Do It With Mirrors'). Also in the same series, 'Nemesis' has several shots of various RR and Daimlers. Mernon Lollich (California)

If I remember corectly there was a vampire movie called Thirst that was made in Australia in about 1978-1979 staring the late Max. Phipps. This film featured a Silver Shadow.

Whilst dozing in front of the usual dross of evening TV last night I happened to see "Get Carter" (1971?). Stacks of RR&Bs in the film including no fewer than 7 pre-War cars in one shot. Unfortunately, I did not have the recorder on so missed all of the numbers. The film was terrible. Stephe (GB) |

Remember the Arthur movies with Dudley Moore? In the 1st film he was driven around by Vitterman in a Mulliner bodied Silver Wraith and if you listen carefully, there was a slight V8 burble from the exhaust (Why would they do such a travesty?), In the 2nd film he was being wafted around in a James Young Phantom V. He also had a nice Packard Coupe'. |

"Department S" with actor Peter Wyngarde is, along with "The Avengers" one of my favourite tv shows. Sir Curtis Seretse (head of Department S) always was chauffered around in a Phantom. One of the many rewind moments on that series was when an Italian diplomat is blown up in another Phantom (the production company probably used the same car that the boss, Sir Curtis had)...but when Department S goes to check out the car to find out what happened the bombed out car now happens to be an Humber Super Snipe Mark 1 or 2!!! (Before I had a shadow, I had four Humbers...) Guess it was cheaper to ruin a Snipe than a Phantom... Does anyone re-call the name of that horrible movie made in Australia that cut up a fine Bentley "R" and turned it into a Ute? I liked the movie but almost cried when they cut the car up... Just had a flash, was the movie "Spider and Rose"? |

I hate seeing any model Rolls-Royce ruined for the sake of a film. There are not enough of them as it is. I remember another film about twenty or more years ago that starred Kurt Jurgens and Michael Crawford (Some Mothers do'ave 'em), where Michael Crawford drove a Phantom two (or was it a 1?) into a swimming pool. Such a waste. |

Okay I can contribute. Just watched SIMONE with Al Pacino. He drives a Corniche and she is buried out of a Cloud III hearse. |

The Bentley "ute" (I'm not sure it was strictly a ute) appeared in the movie Rikky and Pete directed by Nadia Tass. If I could find my copy of "Get Carter" I could possibly identify the many cars in it. Sure it's a bleak movie but I find it almost Japanese in the issues it raises: honour, loyalty and playing by the rules. I love Japanese movies. A few movies that haven't been mentioned yet: - Thomas Crown Affair (1968): Thomas Crown drives a Silver Shadow. - Easy Rider (1969): The cocaine buyer is chauffered in a Silver Cloud III. And of course there's the TV show "Skippy the Bush Kangaroo" in which Dr Spock(?) (played by Frank Thring) always traveled in Phantom II 147GN. A currently available DVD of this most famous of Australian exports contains an episode that features 147GN in numerous scenes. More than once you can hear the characteristic sound of a Phantom engine starting and taking off.

Not sure that the Bentley "ute" in Rikky and Pete is the same car as the Bentley used in the rest of the movie, I read somewhere that it was a "made up" prop. There is a shot of a Shadow in I Spy, a recent movie starring Owen Wilson and Eddie Murphy. As usual if a movie maker wants to illustrate wealth they use a Rolls Royce, after all what other car has the exclusive mistique of a Rolls. |

Let's not forget the 1960's police series Burkes Law. His mode of transport was a Silver Cloud. IN the '50's British comedy films, James Robertson Justice usually travelled in a Rolls-Royce or Bentley (A W.O. Bentley of course). |

How could you all forget the unsilenced Shadows in the Cannonball Run series of films driven by Jamie Farr ("Klinger" from MASH fame) playing an Arab Sheik!! Reminded me of the real Shadows that competed in the Paris to Dakar rallies with the bare unsilenced exhausts exiting the sides of the bonnet...ahh the smell of fumes with the windows down must have been intoxicating... A young Michael Caines boss in one of the Harry Palmer movies drove a Bentley Continental also. Robert, as for the V8 burble in Arthur, you can't rely on it as most car sounds in movies are added later by the "foley artists"...that's why there is often tyre squeel even when movie cars are on dirt, 4 cylinder cars suddenly sound like a Ferrari V12, autos are heard double de-clutching, and downshifts are heard when the actor is actually upshifting...yep movies: all smoke and mirrors I'm afraid...mind you I am assured the sounds of the Lambo in the intro to the first Cannonball Run film were recorded from a real Countach....absolutely LUVERLY... Hello Gentlemen: We've been having monsoonal rain here in Hong Kong, and so I started going through odd collections of Rolls-Royciana and delved into the films. Yes, Chris, the original "Thomas Crown Affair" featured a lovely pre-safety Silver Shadow MPW Coupe in Brewster Green -- I always play the part when he drives home with the loot on slow motion. How far more gentlemanly and stylish than the Arnage Green Label in the remake! Now, for some real obscurity: "The Second Best Secret Agent In The World" Truly dreadful film, except for the Silver Wraith Freestone and Webb limousine. And who could forget "Burke's Law" with Gene Barry? Or the pilot for the series, "Who Killed Julie Greer?" with Dick Powell. And yes, Jason King -- does anyone remember him driving an S2 Bentley Continental James Young 4-door saloon? Or "Charlie Bubbles" with Albert Finney, and the Silver Cloud III HJ Mulliner conversion drophead? A wonderful scene with Yootha Joyce in a Phantom V. "The VIPs" is another good one for Rolls-Royce, but I'll let you all go with a really hard-to-find film: "Eye Of The Devil" with David Niven, Deborah Kerr, Sharon Tate, David Hemmings. Early 1960s film about devil worship on the French Riviera. Everyone has a fabulous home and car, including a Bentley S Continental Park Ward drophead. Yum! Oh, and let's not forget a plethora of Peter Sellers films ... cheers to all |

A number of years ago I remember seeing the movie version of The Who's Tommy. I remember noticing a Rolls Royce Hearse in 1 scene. I think that it was either a Cloud or a Phantom.

Hi Jim. I couldn't see it on the DVD sale sites in Australia. That is if you are looking for the 1964 Ingrid Bergman one. But I did spot it on Channel BT. I don't recommend BT though. If you want, I will try and find a DVD from O/seas. With current DVD players, you won't have region problems. |

Jim. I have found where you can buy the DVD of the movie. It is owned by Turner Classic Movies and would be sent from America. Cost would be USD30.00 - $17- for movie and $13-P&H (AUD36.00) delivered. This is exact link to the movie http://turnerclassic.moviesunlimited.com/product.asp?sku=D55609 I've watched the movie via other means but the small cost to get a professionally produced DVD is what you want. |

ps: international postage is cheap, and it only takes days to arrive. I have bought many DVDs for Australia and Switzerland through Amazon.com from Germany, the USA and the UK for a start. It may even be available at Amazon Australia. I assume that you have a proper country-code-free DVD player. If not, you can buy a DVD coded for any region in the world and simply burn a code-free DVD copy from it on your computer using a double-layered blank DVD. RHT. |

Region free DVD players that also play computer videos (Avi,DivX, Xvid and Mpeg) can be had for as little as AUD30-. Pity is, they don't last, being made of inferior moving parts (the dvd drawer for one). Spend much extra and get a known brand. Your key words are 'region free', 'DivX or Xvid'. I haven't seen one DVD player that have both DivX and Xvid branded on it. They are mostly compatable from my experience as a lounge lizard. DivX is a proprietry brand where Xvid is open source. You'll mostly find DivX, so get that. For the time and knowledge needed to convert DVDs to play an American or other region DVD on your Australian region DVD player - buy a region free as Richard was intimating. Be sure it has DivX or Xvid - simply because for no extra money, you can cram on 6 movies to a single layer DVD and off you go. I can fit 13 episodes of a TV series on a single layer (DVD-5) and lounge around for the day without get up to change the DVD. Gone are times of worrying about importing DVDs coded from different regions. In support of DivX and Xvid (reversed letters), there are many free and legal movies, documentaries and other movies available on the net. Makes for great viewing. My favourite site is http://www.archive.org/index.php |

If you have used up your allowance for region changes on your computer DVD player and you are permanently locked into one region, there is a useful freeware progamme DVD43 which will enable your locked player to play a DVD regardless of its region coding. Read the documentation to learn about other benefits from this software. The latest version of this software [V4.4.1] may be downloaded from the following link - MajorGeeks is a long-established source of virus-free software: http://majorgeeks.com/DVD43_d6135.html |

I was keeping it simple mentioning double-layered DVDs for 1:1 copies. Cheap and simple. You can also google to find DVD Shrink freeware to cram 10 DVDs into one, of course trading quality off against screen time. Then again, with Terabyte portable hard drives costing next to nothing and fitting in your top pocket like my primitive Verbatim USB job which is USB powered, a DVD is not necessary at all. RHT. |

Richard, I let others do the AVI decoding. 6 movies on a single layer suits me fine. The quality is tops when doing a John and Oko in bed. Who wants to get out of bed to change DVD for each movie. You're right about DVD-9 blanks. They were $10 each when a single layer was 70 cents. Now they are a $1- so shrinking is probably not worth it. But, when entertaining and the wives want to watch a movie before getting in the spa, my mates and I insist on Factory produced romantic DVDs with with Dolby Digital. 2 hours for a movie and the wine consumed in that time makes for overall better evening. Portable hard drives are great. You can drop them and they still work. Around 1991-2 I spent about $550- on a 250 meg hard disk. This was a massive improvement for my PC. Got home, got out the car, dropped the drive. 3 fence palings soon became the next things broken. |
