Arthur J. Rowledge, possibly one of the 20th century's greatest aero-engine designers. His involvement in the roll-call of honours for the design of the Merlin is often quoted yet this is confusing. Has anyone ever come across a chronological timeline that accurately describes his role and at what point did he commence design work on the Merlin and what aspects specifically did he author? This is an historical issue that needs clarification.

Andre,

I suggest you need to follow up this involvement through the international and UK aviation history archives rather than the automotive side of Rolls-Royce.

There would be numerous historians in the UK specialising in WW2 and the role of the British aircraft industry and hopefully all Statutes of Limitation regarding British WW2 aircaft industry activities and events would have expired by now.

As a starting point, I would be contacting the Imperial War Museum and the Farnborough Air Sciences Trust to see what help and guidance they can provide regarding archives and repositories of documentation regarding WW2 aircraft design, testing and manufacture.

The Rolls-Royce aircraft division might also have details on archivists and/or historians who could provide further information to both Rolls-Royce and Packard in the USA who were also involved in manufacturing the Merlin engine for you.

You just need a little luck in finding initial leads to people specialising in WW2 industries and equipment that can provide additional information and contacts for following up what is available and accessible.
