hi my RR Phantom has a issue. it only smokes on one side when idle and driving off. it has a funny smell to the smoke. it only smokes when fully warm. its light at the moment but I am sure it'll get heavier. what could be the causes of this? new headgasket was replaced 2 years ago by a specialist.

Verify with UV dye. Likely gasket. |

Were the heads checked for warping ? If all that was done, was replacing the head gasket(s), then the mechanic should have checked if the heads were straight and he should have pressure checked them as well. Note that if the heads were warped, the whole head has to be made true again, just plaining the deck is incorrect. If they are warped, the valve covers will never seal right and will always leak. |

(If they are warped, the valve covers will never seal right and will always leak.) If the heads are that bad on the bmw Phantom the car would be a non runner. Any small leak within the engine would be taken care of with the two PCV valves. Ah! PCV's on a Phantom are not a service item but they do fail and cannot be repaired causing heaps of problems! |

From experience - I had the same issue with my Phantom but on both sides. It was the rocker cover gasket in my case and a cheap fix really. Have a look under the bonnet to see if you can see any obvious leaks. Then get underneath and remove the cover to see if you can see signs of any leakage. |

From my experience, any oil leak or misting first points towards a failing with the PCV valves. The BMW Phantom relies on the above working correctly! |
