Okay, it's annoying me now, rev counter (tachometer) is erratic, sometimes fine and others, it jumps a few hundred rpm (instantly - far faster than our long stroke engines could increase speed unless propelled by TNT) and stays reading high for a while then returns to normal. There are places that will repair the DIP but want £400 - £600 plus to do so. I do not wish to spend that amount! So what is it that actually goes wrong with the DIP? |

Dear David, The DIP and the rev counter are two very different things. The DIP is the centre part of the cluster. The rev counter is a stand alone gauge that is part of the overall cluster. In short there are three items in the cluster. The speedo, the DIP and the rev counter. Getting the DIP overhauled will not fix your rev counter problem. |

An erratic tachometer is usually the sign of an ignition fault as the signal for it is fed from the ignition control module or coil depending on year. Check and clean all wiring connections at the coil and module first. Of course the tach itself could also be faulty. What year is your SZ? I think David has the more modern model that has 8 coils. |

Yes it's a 98. Specialist thinks its the whole panel that needs repair but I really don't want to spend £600 plus VAT etc on this, but it is irritating me. |

Replacing the whole cluster is madness . |
