Would this A/C compressor fit my '79 UK-spec Shadow ?

I'll be going to Florida next July and am contemplating picking one up as they are much cheaper than buying one here in Europe.

I think its a good idea to have a step by step A6 compressor rebuild tutorial. There are a few on You tube but there isn't a comprehensive start to finish full overhaul for dummies one. Has this already been covered under a previous thread or in Tee One topics?
Many of us have perfectly good compressors that will work another 10 years if overhauled properly. I would rather overhaul mine than buy a rebuilt unit of dubious engineering build quality.

 Omar,

To the best of my memory, I have never seen an air-con compressor rebuild covered in a R-R/B forum but they may be in a GM-oriented forum.

Given the number of these units in service in Australia, the professional rebuilders here invariably have warranted service exchange units "on the shelf" at very reasonable cost making the decision to purchase rather than overhaul an easy one.

I accept this situation may not apply in your location hence your need for a rebuilding guide.

There is a decent A6 tutorial on HotRod.com I used this and several other youtube videos to rebuild mine. I'm at work right now and the software filter won't let me search a site with streaming media (except Youtube - explain that), but my phone tells me that the title of the article is: "Air Conditioning Compressor Rebuild, Part 1". There is also a part 2.

 Thanks guys.
I wish our scarp yards had £30 compressors in them. Our yards have "old cars"form the 90s in them. never older than that and then mainly Japanese cars.
The A6s are getting harder and harder to get. The rebuilt ones are not all rebuilt properly. I have 6 core units at home that i want to rebuild over time when i am comfortable with the rebuild process.

Hahahahaha you are welcome to have one - but these things are an arm and a leg to transport because they are so heavy.
Don't bin any of your old A6s as they will soon disappear off the face of the earth.

I wish there were scrapyards in middle England like Bob's. There are a few specialist Rolls and high end car breakers " who know the value of parts " and the rest break post 2000 year cars. The days of classic cars on scrapyards are long gone in the UK.

The modern day equivalent of "scrap yards"as I used to know them in the 70s and 80s is very different.
One day I will take photos of our parts recyclers and show you what its like here.
We have hundreds of shops all close together each of them only selling one component but millions of different ones. For example an alternator shop will sell millions of alternators of all makes. The guys there know alternators so well that they can match yours straight away. Then there are shops that sell small things in buckets (like a bucket of 2A fuses, a bucket of coils, a bucket of horns etc).
I will try to get some photos.

 Geoff,

you're right the link isn't visible as I forgot to include it.

I recently read an article on the Dutch Mercedes R107 (SL) site on the R12 refrigerant. Apparently you don't have to convert an old A/C system to accept R134a but could simply recharge it with R437a.
Does anyone have experience with this ?

I don't know what the situation is in Europe, but R-12 is still widely available in the US for a premium. The local shops I've talked to still have stocks of it and it can be bought on eBay if you are certified. The certification process is a matter of reading the regulation booklet and paying $20 to take a 3rd grade reading test. I wouldn't consider switching over unless I absolutely had to.

 Kelly,

here in Europe R12 has been outlawed so switching over is the only solution.

R12 production has been outlawed since '96 but old stock is still available here. Are you certain that old stock is illegal there?

 Unfortunately, yes.
Here in Belgium it is illegal since 2001. Even if you should have old stock left you cannot use it.

Hi Benoit, Looking at the spec sheet for the R347a it seems to require you to do as much work and expense as converting to 134a needs, new o'rings, new dryer, adjusting the expansion valve, possibly removing the existing oil to add a different one.

At least 134a is more available at the moment. Although being phased out over time as well. . . Hopefully it will be more compatible with the new 'legal' gas which is crazily expensive so far.

R!2 - old or new stock - still strips Australia of their ozone layer. I guess it's a choice of drivers being better cooled in their R12 emitting cars or Australians.

Best not have a vote on that on this site . wink.

 Hi Benoit

I can't help with your question as I have so far not had to work on my aircon system. However, the part you specify at Advance Auto Parts is listed in Larry's Substitute Parts document, although not in Brian's.

 Larry's document is here:

What part of Florida are you visiting?

 Hi Geoff,

 thanks for the link.

We'll be starting in Miami and then go north to Orlando, Daytona and St Augustine. We'll then head west to Sarasota, Naples and to the Everglades to end our trip on Key West.
