I am trying to remove the steering column on an S3 Continental to replace the rubber steering coupling between the steering inner tube and the steering transfer gearbox. So far, I have removed the steering wheel (not necessary I am told, but it gives better access and makes other things easier), removed the floor panels, disconnected and freed the gearchange, horn, microswitches etc etc. and removed the outer tube retaining nuts at the transfer gearbox All that is quitre time consuming and some quality specialist tools were required which, thank goodness, I own. I can pull the outer steering tube upwards until it is stopped by the inner steering tube. My understanding is that the inner steering tube should now disengage from the dog drive which goes through the rubber coupling UR3121 and come right out. Am I missing something here, or should I apply force ? I know from the various specialist Crewe repairers that I am on the right track, and that the column may be removed without touching the transfer gearbox or the steering box. Any advice would be appreciated. RT. | ||

Problem solved. Today I pulled a little harder and the column came off. No problems. The coupling cover is a bit corroded hence the difficulty, and it does not go on freely yet. Even with the new rubber coupling not inserted the cover will not go far down enough to fit the retaining circlip. A clean up with a fine file tomorrow should do the trick. RT. |
