Hi, I suspect I'm having a blonde moment but here goes anyway. I have been (very) slowly rebuilding the engine from B188AK and have just pressure tested the crankshaft and all seems fine with no oil from the blanking plugs and enough seeping from the bearings and camshaft...all except the rear main and rear cam bearing. Where do these obtain their oil? There is no gallery from no.6 big end to the rear journal, there is no hole in the rear journal to feed the bearing. There is a feed gallery from the rear main to the rear cam bearing but no oil at either. This early crank has a welch plug style closure at the outer end. (B14BH, mine, has a rubber plug in the rear main). What am I missing please? |

It is so long since I started this job I couldn't remember where the galleries were. I could see the swelling at the web down to the cam bearing but the web from the main oil gallery to the rear main didn't look to be thick enough for a drilling. This block was left uncovered in an open shed and there were a number of mud wasp nests in it. I thought I had thoroughly scrubbed all the galleries with engine brushes, kerosene and air. Yesterday I undid the mains and bigends, lifted the crank and found to my embarrassment, the rear gallery blocked with a mud wasp. Every time I stop work on this engine I wrap it in plastic to prevent this very thing, so I must assume I failed to clean the gallery. This forum gives me a wonderful venue to air my incompetence. Best to you all and I will keep you posted. Carl |
