Gents, My wife & I watched the original Italian Job last night, and we both loved it. We also watched the new version directly after, and it was terrific as well. But to my shock & horror. Have you seen what they did to the E Type Jags, the Aston Martin DB4 & the Lamborghini Miura in the movie? Listen to the music, it sounds like a Thunderbirds episode. Patrick, it is a great movie indeed and I should watch it again. I read somewhere that for the Aston they used a Lancia Flaminia when they pushed it down the mountain and apparantely the E-type survives. I don't know what happened to the other cars. Benoit | ||

Waste of E type. Why do people build such daft cars even as a tribute to a film. When I pass my wife is going to stick in the boot and fly tip me in amongst old fridges and mattresses, think of the money saved. The local recycle wont take corpses. And I pay over a £1200 a year in local taxes, what a rip off. Fortunately it appears that because the recycle tip is a public amenity and paid for by the public they cant legally charge for dumping household waste, so hopefully gate charges wont happen. The Italian Job is one of my favorite films. | ||

Bob I still like the Dustin Hoffman "Graduate film" Still have my Alfa Romeo Spider Duetto 1750cc One of the first if not the first in the UK in 1968. Last used in 1987 for hols in France. The number plate is worth a few spuds. Nothing like a red Alfa RHD as well. The 2 litre version is not that much faster and on the road in real life conditions not that noticeable. 70 mph in a 2 litre is the same as 70 in a 1750. Alfas are not as un-reliable as some say, easy to work on. They can rust bad but again easy to weld up again, I took the engine and gearbox out of a Spider in 2 hours. Check out the new Alfas beautiful cars. African Queen with Humphrey Go cart is one of my favorites. Not seen the new Italy Job film. I have titanium hips and wrist bracket. I wonder how much scrap value. In 1969 a new Aston was about £6000 and well within a major films budget so destroying a second hand one a few years old was no problem and Aston could quite easily make another, after all Aston reason for existent is to make lots of Aston Martins. Yes the Vantage is sure in the Aston number game. Nearly bought a one off spec a year ago, a 84 year old beat me to it, Poole dealership. I still have all the Alfa tooling for repairs from the 60s up to the 80s. | ||

Westover is a very old company, and have a good reputation. I read of an accident in the 1920s where one of their cars had a wheel fall off which resulted in a fatality. I think Austin 7 in Westover Road by the picture house. This was discussed when I did my Certificate of Management for MIMI. | ||

Somehow I've grown to adult status and never watched The Italian Job. I rectified this the other night. Great movie. Michael Caine and Noël Coward were fantastic . . . and Benny Hill with the big girls was hilarious. By the way, in the traffic scene where the Land Rover is stopped, I saw a white Maserati Sebring like one I once owned. I love car spotting in old movies. Now I need to find time to watch the Godfather and Jaws, two other classic movies I also haven't found time or inclination to watch. | ||

Good stuff John, I loved the road scenes in the movie, there was so much to see. Italy from the 60's was great for cars. Try to catch the new movie, worth a look. I haven't seen any godfather movie, but like you, will now give them a go. | ||

You may get ahead of me on both those movies. Reason I've grown gray and haven't watched them is not accidental. It's because I don't care for suspense or gory movies. I(we) tend to prefer mysteries, some scifi, comedy, drama, and such. E.g. relatively light fare. Over the past decade or so we find ourselves watching many more foreign films and mysteries, usually with subtitles. France seem to have the most intense of the detective type programs and the ones we've watched are all contemporary tableaus. The Swedes Italians, and Germans run a close second but are more cerebral. Then there are the ones in our native(ish) language, the English and Australian mystery programs. These are both top tier. A recent Australian favorite are the Doctor Blake Mysteries, which is in addition to the Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries series are greatly anticipated in our household. Both are world class films, and the latter in particular sports very nice automotive-porn. | ||
