Get a trough big enough for the spring.

Fill trough with paint about 1" deep and roll spring in trough of paint then hang above trough to drip dry. Use enamel because it us flexible. The very best paint is ICI Dulux chassis black which remains flexible and never quite fully dries. However exterior grade house hold paint is ok plus lots of colours. Green seems to be popular.
