In 1906, Charles Rolls and Henry Royce wanted to concentrate on building a touring car or 'town carriage' rather than a noisy racing car hence the six-cylinder model of 40 or 50 h.p.. Smoothness, quietness and reliability were the key selling points. Since all the metal parts which showed were plated with real silver and the body painted with aluminium, it was christened the 'Silver Ghost'. For the next twenty years, over six thousand 'Ghosts' were made.
