Can anyone advise if the final drive mounting and potential failure of the rear compartment floor in use is restricted only to the Series 1 cars, or also the series 2 Silver Shadow?

The mounting area on the boot floor can crack which is easily visible.
The mounting on the cross member for the final drive which bolts to the above boot floor mountings can crack and pull through.
Both of these weaknesses can easily be modified.
But if the mountings do fail then a drive shaft will pop out and flail around underneath and do lots of damage which won't be easy to put right. It could even cause a fatal accident.
So my advice is that if any suspicions arise that all is not well in the rear end then the car must be checked and if necessary modified.
The floor is modified by welding doubler plates inside the boot to strengthen the area around the bolts. I would use 2mm thick mild steel and be generous of the area covered and continuously weld.
The original design of the actual final drive mountings is such that the bolt can pull through the mounting. There is somewhere a design that cannot pull the bolt through. I believe Pat Lockyear or Jan Forrest have done this mod and produced a drawing of it.
Also tee one topics mentions it somewhere.
One obvious sign of cracking is a clunking on engaging gear and on over run.
However before one has a sleepless night worrying about broken Shadows, this problem is not common and easily and cheaply fixed.
I think that because the Shadow 1 and 2 and Spirit are the same floor pan that all cars have this weakness.
To check eyeball the boot floor. Then with a crowbar try to prize the cross member away from the body. Don't be shy give a good tug. Any clicking is cracks rubbing
Inspection of body mountings is part of a service.
Most service schedules have a " and anything else" bit.
