Just trying to pull the starter motor out. Workshop manual is not so helpful (remove the three bolts...). Trying to find the third bolt - someone has suggested that it may be coming in from the back, and there are only two at the front. Do anyone have any experience pulling these things out - I should say that mine looks smaller than the one in the manual, so perhaps a replacement itself. All the best from NZ, Daniel |

Hi Daniel My car is a 74 Silver Shadow so your engine should be the same. Yes, the third bolt is accessed from the rear. I used a long extension with a universal joint and a socket. I positioned myself under the car, level with the front seat. I took some pics, which may or may not be helpful.

This topic from when I replaced my Lucas starter with a gear reduction type might help, particularly the photo of "the hole" where the starter gear goes in to mesh with the ring gear, which shows the holed for the 3 retention bolts around it. Thanks Geoff and Brian, this has made my day and determined my weekend! I've never encountered a starter motor with a bolt in the rear before... |

Thanks Geoff and Brian. I've posted two of my own pictures. Your pictures were amazingly helpful - I think I got the right bolt - circled in one picture and approximate position indicated with an arrow in the other. But goodness me, it wasn't going to turn for love or money. It has turned me melancholy! From your view of the pictures can I confirmed that I have the right bolt? All the best from NZ Daniel

Hi Daniel I do recall there were two bolts but it was a few years ago that I replaced my starter motor, so I cannot remember which one. Sorry I can't help, I can't remember how I determined which one to loosen. |

Hello Daniel Sorry I can't help with the Shadow question - however - do you still have the Cloud? David |

Cheers both. I might just refit the darn thing and get it to a mechanic who has a hoist! David, we still have the Cloud and regularly use it. It is a joy to drive :-) Daniel
