I just swapped the halfshafts in the hope that an annoying vibration would go away, alas without result.
However, the differential now makes a strong whining noise between 40-50mph, especially when stepping of the gas. Before swaping the halfshafts the diff was absolutely silent. I also drained the oil and replaced with fresh one, but could only pour in 2 litres, where the manual says 2,55 litres. Also, the old oil was very dark in colour, so had obviously not been replaced since a long time.
Anybody has an idea what might have happened ?

Regards,
Benoit

Hi Benoit,
I did my diff. oil over the winter and was able to get exactly the right volume of oil back in that I drained out. Forgive me for asking but did you have the car level when you drained and refilled the diff? If it was level, I can't think why you would only be able to get 2 litres back in. Surely the old oil can't have been so thick and contaminated that is has remained stuck inside the casing around the diff. gears? Regarding the whining noise, perhaps the shafts had been swapped from side to side before you bought the car to cure the same problem and now you have put the shafts back as they were, the wear is still there? Kind regards, Chris

The car was level, so that can't be the problem. As I still have the drained oil I'll check how many litres it was.
I guess I'll have to swap the driveshafts again to get rid of the noise.

I refilled them with oil, but I am afraid I used the incorrect 80W90.
Maybe this might be the reason for the whining.
I will drain all the oil and refill with the correct EP90.

I would put everything back as it was. With respect, reading your other posts, you tend to go at it like a bull at a gate. Parts do wear but usually there is a reason. (lack of oil, maintenance etc). Please, when you have a problem, start with asking the forum. You will then get considered replies and be able to chose the correct course of action. Regards, Nigel.

Benoit, I don't think the oil will be the cause. That should be fine.

I'm wondering if some dirt or debris got dislodged and caught in the 1/2 shaft inner bearings?

Benoit/ Paul beat me to it. I think you are clutching at straws. If you have had the half shafts out you will have had the support bearings out. Remove them and check them for roughness or better still replace them with new seals and that will eliminate that area. I assume your wheel bearings are ok??? The oil is not critical. I don't know how many of these joints I have found to be dry and they still don't make a noise!

It sounds awfully like the crownwheel carrier bearing/s have not been set back to their correct positions as Bill suggests. Oil would, as pointed out, have no role unless there were no oil at all. You state that the noise has just started, and it is highly likely to be a crown and pinion whine from how you describe it. Surely it is only safe immediately to stop driving the car altogether until you are sure.

The carrier bearing and output bearing are held in location by the output bearing housing and spacers etc. If parts are not entirely in place, then the crownwheel may not be correctly in position, and so the gears may be meshing badly. A loose carrier bearing will destroy the c&p in no time at all.

RT.

Thanks to all of you for your kind help. Rest assured I will not drive the car before the problem has been fixed.
This morning I saw that the LH driveshaft was leaking, altough I have fitted new oil seals. Could this also be because of a wrongly positioned crownwheel carrier bearing ?

Benoit, could be that the gaitor is split. Have you had a look at outboard hardy spicer joints?,They make more of a whirring humming sound when knackered Regards, Nigel. PS whats happening about the rocking engine?

I just swapped the halfshafts back to their original position and the whining is gone. No more leaks either. This Friday I wil have the wheels balanced on the car and see if there is any improvement with the vibration issue.

Nigel,
as for the rocking engine : a man has to know his limits and I have certainly reached mine. Today I made an appointment with my local classic car specialist and in 2 weeks time he'll look into it.
I planned to use the Rolls for a classic regularity rally this Sunday, but now managed to borrow a Jensen Interceptor for the occasion.

Benoit, I hope you get the Rolls sorted out. Nice when you can borrow a Jensen. I remember one passing me years ago. Uphill, he shot passed like I were stood still! Regards, Nigel.
