I've taken off the grille from my 1979 Shadow 2, but am unable to remove the Spirit of Ecstacy. The workshop manual says I should slacken the nut, accessible through the top hole on the inside of the grille, but even then I just can't remove it. I can lift it a little bit, but it seems there is a horizontal pin right under bottom of the spring that keeps it in place, which is not accessible with any tool ? Am I missing something ? Benoit |

This simplified drawing might make it clear.

Hi Benoit, Unless your mascot has been messed with, all that secures it in its socket is an allen screw which is accessible through the the hole in the back plate of the grille shell (see photo) once the bonnet is open. You should have an allen key which fits it in your small tool kit. Kind regards, Chris |

Benoit, Just to clarify, the whole of the mascot, including the tube and the spring loaded assembly with pin, should be removable in a single unit. Kind regards, Chris |

Hi Chris, thank you for your quick answer. I slackened the allen screw without any problem. But then it seems that everything is still stuck. I tried pushing the tube upwards and also removed the 4 bolts holding the base plate in place, all without succes. Even then I can not lift the mascot or the mascot plint. At first sight it doesn't seem that the mascot has ever been messed with. I have a spare grille without a mascot : there the tube and spring are still in place, so it seems they removed it in a different way. Regards, Benoit |

Hi Benoit, Here is another photo. The mascot and tube should come out in one piece. I wonder if at sometime in the past someone has superglued, soldered or welded the tube into the brass base to prevent theft? The photo shows all the component parts disassembled for cleaning. I hope you manage to get apart without damage. Kind regards, Chris |

Following on Chris' advice I would think that the 'base tube' has simply corroded into the mounting plate. I would invert the grille, make a dam around the mount and fill it with WD40 or equivalent penetrating oil. Leave it for days. Having removed the Allen headed grub screw the mascot assembly should be able to be twisted around but don't force it as the drilled casting can break off easily. |
