I own a late 1977 Bentley T1, which was fitted with an 8 track player. The previous owner replaced this unit with a more modern unit and I'm trying to track down an orginal 2nd hand unit.

The unit is a Pioneer QP-444.

-Can any one help? I'm prepared to pay over the odds for this player!!

-Andrew

Andrew,

I would try watching out on Ebay and similar auction sites also try the various "swap meets" advertised in the newspapers as well. You could also try the wreckers/dismantlers especially those in the USA/UK who specialise in R-R/B. Another possibility would be to advertise in an electronics enthusiasts magazine as a collector may have a unit they would sell if your price is attractive.

The first new car I purchased included an AWA "Clarion" 8 track unit which gave good quality sound and enough volume to be heard over a hard-working 351 Cleveland V8 with dual exhausts!! Only problem was the cost and availability of the 8 track cartridges outside the capital cities. The Pioneer units were "top-of-the-range", extremely expensive and sold in limited numbers hence I would expect it will be difficult to track one down. The Phillips cassette tape recorder eventually killed the 8 track system as it offered both record and play capabilities whereas Lear restricted the licensing of their system to play units so they could collect royalties on the cartridges. By the time Lear allowed the manufacture and sale of record/play 8 track units [Tandy sold a good one] it was too late as the cassette recorder had taken over the market as it was cheaper and easier to use despite its poorer sound quality [later fixed by the Dolby system].

Mark,

Scrap this risk to life and limb immediately. Your best source for a replacement will be Neil McLean Automotives in Perth who wrecks R-R/B cars. His phone number is 08 9250 1400, fax 08 9250 1404.

Unfortunately, GB Spares at Kingsgrove have ceased trading as they were a good source of second-hand parts. The other option is to consider fitting a set of R-R alloy wheels and keeping one of your road wheels as the spare - beleive it or not; the cost of the R-R alloys is comparable to after-market alloys for conventional cars.

Thank you David, but do the alloy wheels still take the hub caps? As I don't want to change the look of the car at all.

Jon,

have you any interior fittings for sale? Such as Cigar lighters? Mine mysteriuosly vanished before I went to pick the car up in Sydney,

Need three, and also tool kit for boot. Small, fits above battery.

Graeme.

Hi Ken,

On the 90 Bentley, was this a pre-airbag
car? If so, did it have the 3-spoke steering wheel?

I'm looking to fit this steering wheel to my '89 Spur. I'm also
looking for the 15" basic standard alloy wheels that came on the
Rolls 1990 models (not Bentley).

If you don't have them now, maybe you will get them in the future.

Thanks!

Larry

Freestone & Webb 6 light sedan body, 1 of only a handful made. Car is running all original equipment except for the addition of indicators ,an oil filter adapter to take Ryco Z9 filters, and a 16 inch thermo fan. Twin Exhaust system has been remade in stainless steel. The car is a late Mk VI, and has the 4.5 litre engine. Upholstery is refinished in maroon Vinyl, duco in 2 pack Ford Polar White B, (old English white). Chassis number B256MD. Engine Number B128. Car is registered as a wedding car, and comes with several bookings and the website www.weddingcars.com.au (see pictures of the car here.)

The chassis and diff where overhauled by Peter Limon at 99,000 miles, the manual gearbox was overhauled by Shaun Brown at 110,000 miles. It has currently 115,000 miles under its belt. It has just been serviced.

I love this car, but cannot justify keeping it without it working weddings, and my family is demanding my weekend attention. With too many toys in the shed, the “biggest” one has to go first. Fitted with new radial tyres all round, it needs a fuel gauge sender unit, but apart from this it runs very well.

Offers around $40,000 for this very useable car. Registered in NSW RC-186
