No need to buy a manual - these are available free from the Technical Library. Just go to the following link and your Corniche is covered by the "Derivatives": http://rrtechnical.info/sz/05_sz.htm |

I own JRH23682 Camargue. It is a 1977 Model. Do I refer to the pre: 30000 derivatives manual for Silver Shadow and does TSD 2939 Camargue manual have anything in it (I have the disc from UK its 90percent empty and the supply won't return my emails - almost a $300 rip off but there are some hard copies on the net)

Vladimir, can you provide any information regarding the history of this vehicle as this will be of assistance in determining which specifications apply to this vehicle as it appears to be an imported rather than Australian-delivered vehicle. I would expect the most useful alternative source of technical information to TSD2939 would be the Corniche-specific information in the Shadow I and II manuals TSD2476 and TSD4200 which can be downloaded from our Technical Library. As a matter of interest, there is a hard copy of TSD2939 currently offered for sale on the following link: http://www.autorepairmanuals.biz/site/573683/product/TSD2939 |

Dave first let me tell you about that link you posted, that is the same firm that offered me the TSD 2939 Hardcopy Manual, what happens is you send them the money then you get an email that tells you they have sold out, then like a mug (I was) you agree to accept the disc instead and you end up with a disc with sfa on it. Thought I would just let you know before some other RR lover does his money like me. JRH 23682 was bought for Hongkong new and paid for through RR in Zurich. It then reappeared a few years later in London owned by a middle eastern gentleman who managed to get RR honor warranty outside the warranty period, then it turned up in USA in two centre lower states before being bought by a NY car dealer from which I bought it and shipped to remote north Queensland where it presently resides in a shed on my property in a town of 13 persons.

OK - did you pay by Paypal or credit card? If so you may have some redress through these organisations if the correct item[s] have not been supplied by the vendor. FIRST OF ALL, HAVE THE CD/DVD CHECKED BY AN EXPERT TO CONFIRM THAT IT IS FAULTY AND GET THEM TO MAKE A COPY OF WHAT YOU DO HAVE. Contact the Michigan consumer protection authorities and find what rights you have under Michigan law and obtain their recommendations on how to proceed with a claim for replacement/refund for faulty goods. The fact that your car is a Hong Kong delivered vehicle gives cause for some concern as other used vehicles from this location sold in Australia have been found to be heavily rust-affected and usually have engine wear much greater than that expected from the mileage travelled due to the engine being left idling for hours to run the air conditioning while the driver waits for the owner to return. Greater than normal wear on the rear seats is a good indication the car has spent some time transporting passengers as well as a driver and these vehicles can be expected to have spent extensive periods of time as an air-conditioned waiting room for the driver hence the engine wear. The emission control system on the engine will be detailed on the emission control certification label fitted to the vehicle. This label should be fitted to the wing valance at the rear of the RHS front suspension spring housing in the engine bay. You will need to know which system has been installed to maintain and adjust the engine settings - given the travel history of the car, do not be surprised if the engine has a hybrid system that will require much patience and expertise to sort out if problems arise. I hope my expectations of the condition of your vehicle are unfounded and you have been lucky enough to purchase a vehicle in better condition than others obtained from this location in the past. If you have time, undertake a search of this forum using "Hong Kong" as the key word for more information. |

David. Thank you for the response. About the cd manual, I could not care less. I think if I refer to the pre 30000 and post 30000 manuals I should be okay except maybe with the wiring diagram and of course I am so grateful to be about to download these manuals for free. The Camargue I have has miniscule rust in it from my inital observation without taking the entire vehicle back to bare metal. I have had it for two years and I should have imagined that if it were a bog mobile more rust should have appeared but at present I have only slight rust in the form of cracks in the paint work which is only 7 out of 10. The interior of the car is 98 % perfect and the rear seats look like they have never been sat in. The engine is said to be blown and to rectify this I am going to spend about $25000 on a Shadow II to swap parts hoping to get a reasonable engine but I have a RR chap Brisbane who can supply a recon engine for $10,000. Luckily I am a mechanic and I have worked as spray painter panel beater so I can pretty much do all the labour myself. All up I will be happy if the vehicle including the purchase price (inclusive of import expenses) costs me around $60,000 AUD) I will never be selling this car and consider myself quite fortuneate in having got hold of something so damn rare. I believe that in 20 years time or before the Camargue prices will go totally ballistic. Its also a mysterious vehicle. There is brass plaque inlayed in the glove box lid on the outside that says "Norman Key". Nothing on the net as to who that was. My only paranoia is ever damaging in an accident the grill which is perfect and the irreplaceable doors boot and bonnet. Glass work is perfect. For some strange reason it came with a 4 barrel holly that bolts straight onto the intake manifold. Obviously not standard but there appears to be not adaptor plate! Sadly I need another Spirit of Ecstacy as mine is gold plated in 22 ct. Might keep that one for my writing desk as I don't want to cop flack from others in the Brisbane Club when I eventually drive the car down there to let them look at it. The hubcaps are those ones you see on some Corniches that go right over the wheel but I think the small ones with the rings set the vehicle off better. Much thanks for your advice and comments. Vladimir, I would have a go at the manual vendor for false and misleading conduct through "bait and switch" marketing which is illegal in most countries. I hope your experience with the car so far continues as you may be one of the fortunate few who acquired a pristine car from what may be considered a graveyard for R-R/B vehicles. The Holley 4bbl carburettor is a legacy of its time in the USA; it would be interesting to get the car on a dyno, tune it properly and see what power appears at the rear wheels. My personal opinion is the car would get up and "bogey" in no uncertain terms. I have kept the best till last - the gold-plated Spirit of Ecstasy can be returned to its original stainless steel finish by a simple electrolytic stripping of the gold plate and mechanical polishing with a stainless steel mirror-finishing compound. Gold-plated mascots are not unusual and conform to the long-standing R-R tradition of owners customising their cars to their own preferences regardless of what others may think. |

Hi Vladimir, I really hope your predictions of future investment potential come true. Mine has a plaque in the glovebox too, which makes it a bit special! They are a great and sometimes misunderstood car. We seem to have our fair share of them in Victoria (about 15 last count) but I doubt you will come across another in your location. Get hold of the build sheets from Barbara Westlake at the RREC. They make for interesting reading.

Hi Mark, thanks for posting. You can contact me directly on zzzzzcobetzzzzz@yahoo.com if you want. So your Camargue is blue with headlight wipers right? I was wondering whether yours has a chrome of stainless steel escutchon plate over the drivers side side mirror controller. The reason I ask is mine only has the wood and that doesn't seem right. Yes I have the build sheets. The handwriting is terrible and hard to understand but still interesting. 15 Camargues in Victoria, how many in the whole of oz do you think? How well does your air conditioning run on R138A? The only difficulty I find in owning a Camargue is that I now want more than one. Vladimir

Dave are you really sure that it is okay, like kosher, to have the Spirit of Ecstacy in gold. Personally,I think having the Camargue on the road will be over the top, but with a gold mascot that really will be super swank. Yes I must look into this holley business closer. There is a firm in I think Nevada that builds 6.75 litre RR engines with a different profile on the cam to give the donk more grunt for about $8K grand but I have also thought about putting the gear off a Bentley turbo on it. This is a car which I intend to spend obscene amounts of money on. It has a gigantic stereo in the boot with 3 amplifiers and a subwoofer. Can't wait to get that happening. Also came with an good CD changer. Was going to put leather food into the hides this weekend but am stuck in my mining town with a pulled shoulder muscle. The only draw back on having a car like this is that there are looneys out there that like to vandalise these jems. I am thinking 38 silenced revolver and a body bag but am too old to do jail. Have you got any tips on how to keep fools away from it or do I just have to always keep and eye on it? Vlad

Individuality has always been part of the R-R tradition however the factory occasionally baulked at some owner-specified options. One instance that I know was in the early 1960's when our local sawmill owner ordered a Silver Cloud III for UK delivery fitted with a tow bar so he could tow a caravan around the Continent [this was in the days when you had to own a car overseas for 2 years before you could import it into Australia duty-free]. R-R refused to include his option so he took delivery of the car in London, drove it to a tow bar installer and had one fitted before heading out on the grand tour of the UK, Ireland and the continent with a caravan in tow. I believe he did subsequently drive past the showroom with the caravan attached for some reason . The car arrived home with the tow bar and was often seen around town towing the caravan or a boat trailer. I subsequently learnt many years later that the Scouting movement had purchased a Roll-Royce and caravan ensemble in the early part of last century for presentation to Lord Baden-Powell - I don't know whether this was entirely a Rolls-Royce creation or a composite from an after-market specialist. As far as your last sentence goes, the price of protection is eternal vigilance unfortunately. You have to assume the worst and hope for the best when you leave the car unattended. I used to carry a car cover for DRH14434 and cover it when parked overnight away from home for this reason. |

Dave I have tried to send you a message but I get blocked and yes I did register. What I wanted to know was this: I have searched the web to find a RR site with as much information on it as this site and I can't find one, is that because this is the best site for RR on the planet or can you recommend another site, and secondly, the trim that RR uses on areas apart from the seats like the trimming around the inside underneath of the boot lid, am I correct to assume that it is all leather or did RR stoop so low as to use vinyl like other manufacturers. The Camargue appears to have all leather because its got fibres underneath it but then some vinyl manufacturers produce a leather type covering which appears to be leather but is in fact vinyl. Even though I most probably will never come to NSW I have decided to apply to become a member of RROA on the basis that it gives out a lot of valuable information so thats my form of charity. Lastly, how do I contact all the other Camargue owners in Australia. I want to establish a Camargue Register and I am collecting every photo and info about all Camargues World Wide for the database and I am going to have a crack at setting up a website for them. Vladimir, you have to wait until your registration is confirmed and you activate your registration as detailed in the confirmation email. In answer to your questions, modesty should restrain me in asserting this is the best open-access forum for R-R/B enthusiasts world-wide due to number of D.I.Y. owners participating and sharing their knowledge. I highly doubt R-R would have used anything other than leather for the Camargue visible trim items but I am certain one of our Camargue owners will be able to advise the correct answer. The "faux leather" you refer to has a variety of names including "Leatherette", "Naugahide" and "Pleather" to name a few. I suggest you should join the Queensland Branch - you are also joining the Australia-wide R-R/B community through the Federal Registers for the various models manufactured over the years and the national magazine "Praeclarvm" which covers historical and technical topics of interest to owners and enthusiasts. When you join the Club, you will have access to "Chassis Plate" which lists club members cars by State, model and year. The only deficiency is this publication does not include cars whose owners are not Club members. |

Ok David, I have no modesty so I will announce now that this is the best site on the planet for RR info and that remains until I find a better site. One reason that I think it is the best site is that if gives so much information for free together with the fact that old Shadows, Wraiths and Spirit and Spurs are going for low dollars and getting wrecked while the gullible public is spending up big on trash like Korean, Chinese and Japanese cars which are basically forms of disposable transport all destined for the scrap yard. Apart from Cadillac, Lincoln, Imperial, Zil and Chaika I don't know that there are any other cars that can be remotely compared to RR/B. These English cars will never be built again with the some materials and devotion to quality and detail. Thanks also for the leather information and the other advice. Vladimir

More on the Holley. I had a close look at the carby and the intake manifold. Believe it or not this 4 barrel device is a big one with vacuum secondaries. Strangely, the thing fits straight onto the RR manifold and only a small modification had been done to get it to fit. The two front studs which would have originally located the solex unit are in the same position but the holes in the base of the holley at the rear have been elogated only by about a quarter of an inch to fit over the rear studs still in their original position. The air cleaner needed to be packed up with three ring gaskets so it sits firmly on the air horn. I thought I had read in one of my RR books or on the internet that this being an early Camargue it should have had twin SUs carbies but its got a plaque on the aircleaner that reads "Assembly No UE 41851" I can't locate that number within the Hunt House documents from Barbara Westlake but the build documents defineately record a Solex being fitted. Why would somebody dump the Solex and install a Holley? Anyway I am going to keep the Holley on it until I find out that somebody has the original Solex. And there arrives the evil question. David has diplomatically called the holley "A legacy of its time in the United States" . Do I keep the holley because I like the hp or do I behave myself and refit a solex and pretend I can behave? Well the carby conversion is one of the ar-see-ests mechanical capers I have ever seen. When I worked in the US there were a lot of butchers in Manhattan NYC but this conversion is pretty damn shmick. You would not know it was there unless you removed the humungous air cleaner. Now I want to run the numbers off the Holley to identify its CFM. One thing I don't like about this holley is that it is a late model holley whereby the loons that control the polution paranoia debacle have got holley to axe the external float chamber adjustments though maybe I am just assuming that. The next step will be to locate the formula that I heard of in Tech College in the 70's which is required so the engine is not over carburated or under carburated. And now a note just to add to the RR/B mystique - this fascinating vehicle was Specified on 14 September, 1975 and delivered to RR Export on 4 August, 1976 prior to being shipped to the Hong Kong Dealer. So thats almost a year in the making, no rush job here. The car then appears back in the UK whereby RR's Marketing Manager extends the warranty from June 1978 to June 1981 !!!!!!!!!!!!! This mind you was initially promised over the phone and confirmed by letter with accompaning certificate. I can't help admiring the British for class manners. Now can anybody tell me what the RR colour "Crown Masons" looks like. The code is LB.66/2C. |

Hi V , technically speaking the carb was changed because the solex carbs were 'crap'. I would advise fitting square tyres before telling you to fit the Solex! They were terrible when new . They were worse on the early Turbo cars and they certainly have not improved with age ! If you are lucky enough to get one of the 10% that was a good one ., you had a lovely sporty car! |

Vladimir, the paint code LB66/2C indicates the paint was supplied by J Mason - see the Paint Code List in the Technical Library: http://rrtechnical.info/miscellaneous/PaintCodes.pdf A search has failed to provide any further information on the manufacturer let alone a colour chart. |

Okay, the holley stays thanks to Paul's dry witty techno commentary. Why wasn't somebody in Crewe shot for this Solex situation? Thanks to everybody else for the pics and the info. The Hunt House file contained some telexes between HK and UK asking if it was too late in the build time to change the colour from Crown to White and as the car is presently White I could not fathom any decision as to what the car was originally when it left Crewe. I seem to have purchased a grand vehicle cross bred with an international mystery. Has anybody actually gone to Hunt House and if so can they tell me about it and or confirm it is the RR/B version of the Hermatige in Leningrad? |
