Some people may have seenn the Top Gear story recently of a race between a car and a light plane from Italy to London.

Also very recently a race took place between the Ghan train, and a car, from Adelaide to Darwin. The car was a Landrover Discovery and it won, even though its driver arrived exhausted after the 3000Km run.

The same article also mentioned a 1939 race between the two transport modes, from Cannes to London. The car was driven by Bentley boss, Woolf Barnato, who wagered 200 that he could beat Le Train Bleu over the 1120 Kms from Cannes to London.

Barnato won easily.
