Recently in one of the postings was a comment about modern mechanics not having the skills.
All is not lost.
Over the last few weeks our apprentice at work has been making various fittings for air suspension he is fitting to a Mk5 Cortina. He has only done the rear so far and brought the car along for us older engineers to have a look.
I thought the workman ship was quite good and the air suspension works quite well. He got most of the bits from an old ambalance.
He is a bright lad because he has fitted two small chambers in line with the air bags these chambers can be shut off using a solenoid valve to give harder ride when required, to fine tune the chambers he has added oil to change the volume.
Next he is going to make a small computer to control the system.
At my suggestion he is fitting a second alternator and an extra battery to run the compressor rather than risking a flat battery.
The present electrical system is about at it's limit and when the front is done the extra will n be available and them some more for our extras such as aircon and electric windows
For a 19 years old he is quite switched on.
Fortunately our Boss is an engineer and encourages the apprentices to do stuff like this and has been known to get parts free of charge.
