A firm called Bigg Red (yes, two Gs) based in Worcester makes stainless brake pistons for many British cars. Shadows use Girling type 16 components in the front brakes (a bit of research should find the corresponding rear types). These are used on lots of models of Ford in particular - 54mm diam x 29mm length. Identical pistons for different models are slightly different prices - browse the catalogue to save a few pounds. They are not expensive and must solve some of the rust/broken chrome plate problems. Other RR/Bs might benefit from stainless pistons, too. They make other brake parts - I have'nt looked at other possible upgrades.

If this has already been reported here, sorry - I have not seen it. I've just fitted them to my 'T' and it seems like A Good Thing, so far.

Thanks for the info Alan. I know that Kelly Opfar at Britishtoolworks.com in the USA manufactures them too but it's good to know there's a supplier on this side of the pond.

Larry, Kelly is a master engineer but the cost of getting the bits here spoils the economics - I would like to use his parts but ....

Strange, but Bigg Red claim that they have no parts for RR/B Shadows/Ts. I have no spare rear pistons to measure, but I'm sure they are on Bigg Red list under another name - Ford???? or any other car that used Girling brakes.

Anyone got some to measure?

Hi Alan, I have a set of rear brake pistons from a Silver Shadow 11 that I can measure later. Just can't find my vernier measuring callipers at the moment.

Silver Shadow 11 has 4 small pistons per rear calliper while earlier Silver Shadow/Bentley T with brake master cylinder had 2 small & 2 large pistons per rear calliper.

Hi Alan, my vernier calliper has sprouted legs but using a carpenter's measuring tape I get 29mm depth × 41mm diameter for the rear pistons in my Shadow11.

Thanks Larry. Anyone got the other size for early Shadows?

Late Shadow rear caliper pistons are both 40.5mm, early Shadows are 40.5mm small and 48mm large.

Thanks Jim for clarifying the diameter. Is the height 29mm for both large & small?
