Anyone ever hear of or see the "abrasive brake pads" called out in the workshop manual for smoothing out the brake disc before replacing the actual brake pads?

Yes, i think 1974 when M170 pads came out if cars were not used frequently the pads would "mark" their outline on disc. When car then used, applying brakes would cause "brake rumble"
Fix was to fit pads suppled by factory with grade 80 sandpaper glued to pad surface. Car was then driven with these cleaner pads in, then originals refitted
