Recently I needed to put the coach lines back on the Bentley Turbo. In the past I had used 'stick on' coach lines but was never happy with that method and to find someone locally with the skill to hand paint the coach lines was not possible. In my research for a solution I came across a company in London that specialised in sign writing and artist materials. After some discussion by telephone with company representative I purchased the recommended paint brush, the paint and mask that I considered the match for the original coach lines. The mask I chose gave a 2.38 mm stripe, 3.17 mm space & 1.58 mm stripe. The mask comes in a roll and is in essence in two parts. Using the curve in the panel on SZ cars I placed the 'sticky' side on the top of the curve just under the door handles. (this was the route of the original coach lines). Once in position and straight on on all the panels, you can carefully peel the clear top layer of the mask cover away which the leaves the mask. With the paint brush it is then possible to hand paint between the mask lines. A steady hand is needed although the paint if not dry can be wiped off using white spirit. When the paint was dry I pulled away the mask leaving, in my case two straight gold coach lines the length of the car. Should anyone need more details I would be pleased to email a fuller account giving some of the techniques I found by trial and error of getting coach lines back on the car and contact details of the supplier of the materials. The fine lines on RR/B were applied by a squirelhair brush by Mack or Blick #2/0 approx 2 1/4 length. The paint is enamel and flows smooth onto the surface resulting in little to no "edge". | ||

Hi Clive, I've recently had a bare metal respray on my Silver Shadow 11 but didn't have the coach lines redone because the paint shop were a little hesitant so I decided to leave well enough alone. I'd be interested to know more about you techniques and about the tape products you used as I might bight the bullet and give it a go myself. | ||

Hello all, Larry I will endeavour to finish the short write up and get it to you asap.I would agree there is 'nothing better than a fineline done by hand' the difficulty I found was finding someone with that skill. I quite enjoy the task of resolving problems associated with our cars, such as refurbishing the door capping pieces which I did following advice from someone that did it for a living. Depending on your level of originality regarding re painted cars, please check your build sheets and they will tell you if in fact you had fine lines (as they were called pre BMW involvement) or Coach lines on your particular car at all, and the colour of those lines. Be careful as to the placement/positioning of these lines, how many there were also, as this can effect the originality of your car as well. Regarding hub caps (pre Silver Seraph), the same applies here. The colour, the positioning and most important, was there one or two fine lines on the hub cap. A sign writer friend of mine had great success with hub cap fine lines using an old record turntable. I’ve seen some great fine lines on cars that looked amazing. |
