Fifty Seven years ago, when I was aged 15 I sailed on a cruise ship to New Zealand with 360 single eligible females. Obverse to the 360 young ladies was a rugby team of about 20 blokes, a fella named Harry who was then my current age (72), and me. Wow! I hear some of you say, but remember this was the time before the pill, and before the sexual revolution of the sixties. Then naivety was the order of the day for many young people, me included. But I do recall vividly what it is like to experience gender imbalance on a huge scale. Somewhat daunting to say the least accompanied with visual overload. How do you choose? This is perhaps similar to my recent sharing of 70 (actually 68) snaps of RR&B motor cars. Too many, too quick. Akin to page three of every tabloid newspaper that features one (only) of the female gender on page three, I thought to continue my postings of my pictures of these fine automobiles one(only), one day at a time. Firstly, thank you Patrick and Omar for your kind comments. Plate B(Now there is a term one doesn’t see often nowadays) Rolls-Royce and Bentley.Both single during adolescence with one participating in the night club scene the other the exclusive boys club. After a marriage of convenience, a long if sometimes mundane union followed by the obligatory mid-life crisis. Then an extra-marital affair with a gun manufacturer no less, the result of which, a rather acrimonious divorce before final settlement. Custody of the children (spare-parts) is interesting to say the least. Never-the-less both spouses now traveling on entirely separate and very successful career paths.  | |||

Life is shorter than what we think and especially when you crack 60 in one piece. Once, I saw Robert HomesACourt driving a brown Camargue past my University with what appeared to be a big Cuban cigar in his mouth. Indeed but the first time I fell in love with the Camargue was in 1976 when I saw it in an American car magazine - Worlds Most Expensive Car test driven in Sicily! It was love at first sight. Yes Vlad, I am fully aware the moderator is for ever present in the background keeping a sharp eye on things. I have some delightful snaps of David taken some time ago in a different life. I may post them later. That brings me to today’s quandary. Plate C. The Rolls-Royce Owners Club Ah the Club! The vexed question is: - Is our club about the cars or the characters that compose it? My personal opinion is that more emphasis should be put on the latter rather than the former, because without the now-ageing membership of the club it won’t, as they say nowadays; - “Go-forward.” I am aware that some people are diametrically opposed to this point of view preferring to compare one piece of Manchester, Derby, Crewe or Goodwood assemblage of metal, wood and leather to another. Incidentally, my own Crewe built automobile is one of what our moderator calls a “Road Warrior” rather than a “Garage Queen”, so much so that I try and drive it daily if possible. My apologies in advance to those of you who don’t think as I do, because some of the following pictures will be of the wonderful members in our club, some past, some present, rather than the conglomerations of metal, wood and leather that are expertly crafted into a Rolls-Royce or Bentley motor car.  | |||

Harry, I have lived in fear that these photos from 2002 would appear one day in a public forum   . I have noticed you have included some photos from this event already and I knew my days were numbered. I hope you have one of me when Peter Briggs started his 4.5L Bentley race car in his Fremantle Museum................. Unfortunately, my change in circumstances in 2004 meant most of my photos are no longer in my possession. The gentleman in the background of your Photo C is well-known to me and was responsible for setting up and coordinating the RROCA NSW Self-Help Group with myself as the "gopher". Also this Forum was set up by another Club member around the same time as an additional service for R-R/B enthusiasts world-wide regardless of whether they belonged to a Club or not and the rest is history. Can one of our Victorian members check the Club shop to see if these hats are still available [and members from other States check their Club shops as well] for Vladimir. P.S. Well Ross, you got me there, I also sold a 1969 Cadillac Sedan De Ville. Gold. Only year made with Ostrich skin leather. Was RHD.That car if its still in the condition it was when I sold it is worth $30,000. I sold it for $3,750! The dopey Italian peasant family I married into thought I was nuts when I bought it for $5,000 because they paid for a brand new Holden Commodore. What an eyesore bucket of plastic pus that was. Yep the Commodore today well you would have to pay a wrecker to collect it. Hindsight is total wisdom. David, Peter gave me a huge chuckle when he binged the ATO for 8M and walked out of Canning Vale goal telling the press, " It was like the best health farm" Peter had a good eye for class. | |||

Plate E An exceptional example of endless energy & enthusiasm In Plate B above the lady on the left is Glenice Matthews who passed away suddenly after a short illness on 28th April 2011. Conversing with her is Neil Williamson a long-standing member of the WA branch, owner of the Bentley in the picture. Glenice was an avid motoring enthusiast nearly all her life and held many positions in the RROCA (WA Branch). She was also a Federal Delegate and the main mover in organizing the 2003 Federal Rally held in York and the 2009 Federal Rally in Albany. Her never-ending enthusiasm for the whole motoring fraternity is so sadly missed. Rest in Peace Glenice. The effervescent Glenice is pictured below (R) at the Albany Federal Rally with my wife Robyn (L).  | |||

Plate F Failure to Proceed. One can’t imagine a more remote place in Australia to suffer a severe FTP than at Kings Canyon in the Northern Territory. Unfortunately Mal & Robyn Henderson’s beautiful Bentley S3 blew a head gasket there in 2006, when participating in the Red Centre Walkabout, when the rear heater hose failed on arrival at the Kings Canyon Resort. Mal and Lloyd Missen then spent four hours attempting repair at the Resort but to no avail. Luckily the engine didn’t seize but the sight and smell of a Rolls-Royce V8 boiling its lubricating oil as the car pulled up, is not a pretty one I can assure you. Full marks to Mal and Robyn who took the issue in their stride and flat topped their car to Alice Springs then shipped it back to Sydney for major repair. Fellow club members took on board the Henderson’s luggage and Janice and Terry Ward gave Mal & Robyn a lift in their 1994 Bentley Brooklands for the 470 Kms on to Alice Springs. (Huge thanks to Mal & Robyn Henderson for their excellent organization of the Red Centre Walkabout, which celebrated 50 years of the RROCA. The walkabout commenced in Orange in NSW, then travelled to Broken Hill, on to Port Augusta, the up to Uluru and Alice Springs and finally on to terminate in Darwin. It was the first South-North Rally by Rolls-Royce and Bentley cars) P.S. Thank you in anticipation Mark Herbstreit for supplying the photograph below.  | |||

I have had a good look at Chris’s photo above and checked the headlights but can’t work out if it is a Silver Cloud 1, 2 or 3. One thing for sure it is not an SY or Derivative because the very solid chassis looks a one piece unit, and I further note with interest that it is particularly well built. David, the event was a President's Dinner that was held in the Perth Town Hall many years ago with an early military war-time theme. The person striding out in front is Club stalwart Bob Buckelton. We had a group of singers on stage who were impersonating ‘The Andrews Sisters’ belting out all the old time war songs. We also had the services of the Kalamunda Youth Swing Band which is a wonderful Big Band youth orchestra, that specializes in that genre of music. As you can see, it was a fabulous night. Vlad, I think you are on the money. It does look good from that angle. I notice in my picture the SY and Derivatives have left a car space between each vehicle. A good habit to get into wouldn’t you say, as removing a dent from an aluminum door skin is not the easiest job around. Patrick, it is nice to see Brian has kept the SOE on in your picture. Road Warriors Over about 40 years or so I have journeyed across Australia and back about 60 times, the latest in February this year, when my trip to Batemans Bay and other places along the way, and then returning back to Perth was a total of 12,500 Kilometers. The distances driving across Australia are similar to those between Vancouver and Montreal or London to wherever…. About a third of those trips have been in the Silver Shadow, the remainder in Peugeot’s of various models. By far the best car I ever owned was the Peugeot 604 in which I did only 660,000 miles or about 1 million K’s. I still have it, but it is presently ‘resting’ in a barn on a friend’s farm. Like the Peugeot’s, the Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow is a great devourer of distances and pictured below in Plate R1 is a typical scene of the outback Australia. (Ceduna Hotel actually- yes, another hotel). Note that the other vehicles parked are of Japanese origin mainly and I can assure it is very rare to see a R-R or B in the Australian outback. (Except perhaps in Mount Coolon)  Plate R2 Athol Thain and his wife Glad were members of Rolls-Royce Owners’ Club of Western Australia for many years until Athol’s death a few years ago. One of the highlights of each year for Athol and Glad was to attend the Annual Federal Rally, no matter what State was hosting the Rally. Athol said that the Queensland rally was the best because it was the longest drive. Each year they would prepare their 1965 Bentley S3 [B284HN] and off they would go, from Bridgetown and later Bunbury in the South West of WA, traveling across Australia to a well rehearsed plan. You only have to notice the stone chips on the front of their Bentley to see that they were true Road Warriors.  . | |||
