My car (Brooklands 'R' - 98, 66221) often has one noisy tappet when started from cold. I have just had it serviced and used Mobil 1 0w40 fully synthetic oil and while it seems to be noisy for less time, it's still there. Also it seems to make a difference depending on the orientation of the way the car is parked - uphill it makes the noise, on the level, much reduced. Is there a cure that won't bankrupt me as I really hate the noise. Incidentally, the noise lasts for up to 20-30 seconds some days. Many thanks. |

This is normal for this engine and 30 seconds is nothing to worry about. What happens is that the engine has 16 valves so when it stops some valves will be open thus compressing the hydraulic tappet whilst parked. When started the oil pumps the tappet up again reducing the valve clearance back to normal. 30 seconds is fast and proves that the valve gear is fine. |

Thank you Robert, that makes me feel much happier I just worry that it will cause valve or camshaft wear/damage and I really do not want that! Thinking about it: if it was a problem, I'm sure the new mechanic at the specialist would have commented as he did about everything else! |

Okay, along the same lines, the car doesn't do it at all if left in the garage! Well, if it does, it's very mild and lasts maybe, 5 seconds. Just been and got it out and silence, I can leave her in the garage for a fortnight and she's pretty much silent, but, outside my gaff, every morning she taps away in a most undignified manner. The only difference (other than inside versus outside) is that the garage is flat and I live on a hill so the car is parked pointing upwards. Do the tappets have the oil inlet at the back? I am no longer concerned about this, just curious... |

David.Do you think it could be a pump you can hear? One lone tappet sounds a little odd don't you think. Nev |

Do the pumps sound like tappets then? Never had a RR product before my two Turbos and they both do/did it but I have no idea what the pumps sound like. Could be I suppose, if the car is on a hill, will it use more reserve pressure to hold the back of the car up? |

The brake pumps sound like tappets when at low pressure |

Don't know if the Brooklands R has self levelling rear suspension buy if it has it might explain the tapping noise of the hydraulic pump raising the rear. This might be more pronounced when the car is parked facing uphill as the rear might sag a little more especially if the rear springs were becoming weak. |

The source of the noise can usually be determined by using a long screwdriver as a stethoscope - one end on the source(?) and the other end in an earole. If it is a pump the sound is very clear. Alan D. |

The Brooklands 'R' has the same suspension as the Turbo 'R' right down to settings etc. So yes, self levelling. I am so sad and OCD and panicky that I had a stick made with a nail in it (wrapped in plastic of course!) that is the height of the rear wheel arch from the road where it is parked outside (I have a disabled spot so always park in the same spot)and it does go down fractionally overnight - not visibly but a tiny difference nonetheless. When in the garage (flat and level) it stays pretty much as it should after weeks. This of course now solves the mystery! Incidentally, sticking a screwdriver into the depths of the engine is not really an option: for one, I would never bend that far and for two, the noise goes away so quickly that I would be still faffing with which end of the screwdriver goes in my lugg'ole by the time all was again, silent, and thirdly, the rotten car has got so much plastic covering the engine it would take an hour just to find the actual V8 and I could NEVER leave all this off... working on the same principal of always wearing clean grundies, just in case of an accident - wouldn't want anyone to think my car was missing bits! |

Had a bit of an investigate, it is the pump for the hydraulics. Definitely NOT a tappet, which is good, I think? If I park it in silly places with a wheel (rear) in an unusual position and immediately turn the car off, when I go back an hour later (or so) the noise is present for about 4 seconds, while the car is adjusting itself I suppose or re-building pressure? |

Robert, I've always been the same: if I care about something then I obsess over it completely, worry myself sick in fact. Then, having worried I spend money, lots of money on fixing things that didn't need fixing, I spent thousands chasing a problem on a Mercedes that simply didn't exist (the problem, the car definitely did). It is truly awful being OCD... But, if I have a car I don't care about, then I can ignore just about anything: my KIA which while I don't quite hate it, is certainly not in my top 20 million favourite things, I just ignore completely, get in, drive, park, walk away. Then I get really annoyed when it goes wrong and I have to spend £20 - £30 on fixing it. For peace of mind, I should never have cars I care about. But, if I don't care, then I get bored and sell the and get something I do care about, and so it goes on... |

The easy way to determine whether tappet or brake pump is to start engine, let it warm, so no noise, then pump brake -does noise become apparent-means brake pump. If on starting noise is still there, try driving 20+miles to bleed tappets. If engine quiet, go back to start of this post. When the Shadow model changed from flex pipes to rigid pipes from pump to accumulator, knock became part of general engine noise during pressure build up, it is NOT indicative of any problems. |

as for almost every car made, the experts will tell you "they all do that mate" . Yes, I got scared by the noisy tapping start up. (magnified by the garage walls . |
