What in the name of all that is good is that trunk on the yellow car? That cannot possibly be factory.

Another beautiful car gone.

The yellow car was seen in a workshop in Dubai.
The engine was a GM unit of some kind and the tail end was hugely modified to make it look like a Continental R/Azure. It did not appeal to me. I will post more photos of that car later.

The Limo is parked on the side of the road in one of the northern Emirates. It is beyond salvage. Such a shame because it is a rare car.

Dear Patrick,
The photo you have posted is from here http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/152420903867?ul_noapp=true

The yellow car and the Limo are not my cars. They are just cars that I saw that i thought were worth sharing.

Thanks
Omar

However, Omar what is not restorable to you may not appear to me to be not restorable. And so I will be jet setting into Dubai on route to Samara Russia in late July 2017 so if you have time perhaps we could visit some of these sad sites together, that is of course if your wife does not croak me at the airport for some dubious notion that I may in some way be remotely quilty for encouraging your slight interest in area of matters automobile.

Patrick there is really no point in you posting fabricated propaganda of Camargues being towed backward in Hawaii!! That is nothing less than claiming that once tea was served at Crewe in a chipped Royal Doulton cup. Its merely counter revolutionary and revisionist.

Sadly Omar Toad will not be accompanying me as he has a prior engagement with the Prime Minister here to inform him that he is indeed a potatoe headed balding wombat incapable of going two rounds with a revolving door and other such undeniable platitudes.

I have tried to reason with Toad but he will not listen.

You and Toad are both welcome. Equally if Toad wishes not to join you then Toadless we can be.
I will be in Japan for the first part of July but will welcome you to see if that LWB Spirit is worth looking at. I will put some more photos for you to see that it is not worth rescuing.
See you in July I hope.....

Vlad,
I do apologise for posting that image again.
I do now remember that it caused a few tears last time now.

I would like to think that it was heading to a better home, and is now the pride and joy in someone's collection, and is being driven well.

Omar,
This limo could be the perfect running mate to Vlads other stretch limo we saw in his pics he posted of his Carmargue.

Patrick I don't have any stretch limo. Perhaps you are referring to my 1976 Cadillac Fleetwood Brougham which is long but not a limo. The limo Cadillac made that year is some two feet longer.

Omar, I think its bloody ghastly. I detest the extra door and the huge RR sign - so very unCrewe it should be struck from the book of life. It reeks of glitter, Elizabeth R would not be amused, and even the corgis would bark at it.

I think that Shadow LWB extended to Even longer wheelbase is a lovely car. You can debling the ugly RR signs and then you have a really really nice stretched limo.
I love the extra door!!! so practical and appropriate too.
It is certainly well built.
I dont need any more cars nor do I want a limo but if I did - this one would be ideal!!!

Now now Omar no need to tell fibbers. ie " I don't need any more cars "

There is a statue/bust of I think Socrates at the University of Western Australia and inscribed are two words " Know Thyself "

Clearly, you have the Jay Leno complex just like me though your collection is far grander than mine until of course I work out how to sell Tasmania to Putin or Ayers Rock to Trump.

You will convince me that you are Chinese before convincing me that you are not going to continue your collecting. In any case check out my blat in the Shadow forum about the white 85 Spur.

Patrick, the utes in the photos are homebrew? Surely RR never offered them, right? The yellow one is attractive enough and looks especially well done though that looong deck lid looks unwieldy, especially if there's much wind! I recall an author, Clive Cussler, who occasionally writes about a character (Dirk Pitt) who owns a RR that was once involved in a rear end accident. It's been converted into pick up truck (ute) although my impression he's referencing a rather older vehicle than a Shadow. Finally I'm with Valdimir in calling our Omar for a porky.

Hi John,

Yes Omar is full of it, he will buy what takes his fancy LOL

The utes or pick ups you are correct they never did them but I do understand they did these estate Wagons.
Not sure if built in house, but sold through dealerships I understand.
Not pretty but hey.

I particularly dislike the sedan/saloon rear door tops, that don't follow the roof line.

I like the yellow one as well.
Here is another pic. I do like the front end, and the black trim.
Please see below for another look.

But the MPW or Corniche that has been turned into the pick up/ute, is a travesty!!

The mechanic who looked after Robert SRH12255 before I purchased it in the southern highlands of NSW has a magnificent Bentley pick up.

It is actually very nice indeed.
This is the actual vehicle

When my Mk VI was rear-ended in 2002 I was more than prepared to have it converted into a flat tray ute like the one shown. I would have opted for a squared off cabin, though, as that rounded one looks like a moonshiner to me.

As it happened the car was repairable and returned to its saloon state.

Patrick,

Phil Sproston has a Shadow estate conversion [SRH4032] by Panelcraft in the UK.

I have seen this car when Phil brought it to several Self-Help Days in the early 2000's and it looks very classy in keeping with the R-R styling tradition.

SRH4032

Unfortunately, the "chop top" Shadow does nothing for me as I am not much of a hot rod enthusiast.

Chris, do you think the "spirit" of "Black Bess" was responsible for her being restored to her original glory? I suspect she may not have approved of any proposed changes to her original appearance.

But that yellow car is ghastly.

You lot have got me figured out!!! I cant believe how well you can read me.... such evil people who i just cant lie to....
Although I have sworn not to buy any more cars - there are 2 cars that may ..... just may make me change my mind. It scares me that this could indeed happen..... The two cars are a 100 series Mercedes - not the regular ones - only if it is a LWB one. And the other is an Aston Martin. I have owned an Aston Martin Lagonda before - so no more of these cars for me... but what if a really sweet Aston Martin came along??? could any of you guys resist it? what about a Camargue guys??? if one of those landed in your lap would you walk away?? surely not...

Hi Omar,

What about a Mercedes 6.3? I've always wanted one of those as a gullwing isn't remotely within my budget.

The Camargue is one thing I could never get on with. I want to like it, but I just can't.

I do share your weakness for Astons, though. That's my Vanquish on the far right (with the door open):

Calamity Jane

Cheers,
Jeff.

Wow Jeff - you see how amazing these cars are? Astons are fantastic and you are lucky to have one. The Aston I had was a joke one and I was really happy the day I sold it.

Yes the 6.3 is lovely and I have already had one of those for many years. The 600 is such a marvel of engineering which is why I want one. And not just the run of the mill ones - it will have to be LWB one. I already have my eye on one locally. I may end up owning it in a few years time - let us wait and see......

No Omar,
You can't hide from us.

And do you know why?

We are all the same.
We all would buy another car tomorrow,
does not matter about space or other things, we would do our best to own another one more sooner than later

Oh BTW a LAGONDA??? I'm glad you have gotten better now mate.

I could see us all hanging out of the 100 series LWB Merc when we visit you in Dubai!

Jeff,
I do think there is no better sounding car than a V8 Aston Martin.
Horn material at its best.
Your Vanquish is amazing, and the colour is unreal. Love it

I'm with Jeff,
If someone said, here take this Camargue for free.
I'd say no thanks. (sorry Vlad)

Hmmm, the Camargue isn't that bad! In fact, if one in the right condition and the right price popped up I'd give it serious consideration.

Regarding Dirk Pitt, and the RR pickup, I misspoke (typed). I meant John D. McDonald's character Travis McGee, and his Miss Agnes, a 1936 Phantom converted into a pick up by a previous owner due to a rear end accident (and also painted blue by a previous owner). Sorry for the confusion.

Omar that video of a Shadow with a Toyota Land Cruiser undercarriage is positively obscene. Its just not right, its mega ugly and reeks of bad use of loot. The owner needs slapping on both cheeks with a large smelly wet fish by Sir when he's jolly baity!

Slapping a miscreant around the chops with a wet fish is an old London punishment. Which cheeks Vladimir means I am not sure ducky.

Dave G, I like the hot rod and it has been very executed.

I very much like the estate. The rear doors are very similar to Volvo 245 Estate they curve down at the rear. The rear suspension of the shadow is not suitable for an estate due to the suspension towers. John Entwhistle from the WHO rock band had a Shadow estate for his 2 great Danes. It had lockers in the back for doggie accessories and shot guns, all carpeted in wilton of course. As a shooting brake it would get bogged down.

The Toyota with the 2 door Shadow body on it is horrid and a horrid paint scheme.

Never mind wet fish, hangings too good.
Must stop reading the Daily Mail comments.

Patrick,

You are certainly a man of unusual tastes. I liked it better in the before picture before the flames.

Also, I think it was a RR because of the hood ornament.

Patrick, I agree, the pearl white Bentley is not bad. Mullener MKVI I think. And then there's something about a Cloud with a spoiler.....
Look at the bright side chaps, I'm sure most of these cars were in a scrap yard when found and "resurrected" for what ever purpose. We Yanks love our automotive diversity and customization. From a VW bug with a V8 to a Silver Shadow 4x4, we thy anything.

Ross,

That IS a cloud, I was referring to pic 7.
Even with mags, still quite elegant.

Mark,
Your spot on.
At least they are still driving up and down the road, so not such a bad thing.

Rather fun to look at actually.

Patrick,

I was only funning with you. The white Royce is a little too hosed down with go fast kid parts for my tastes but it trips somebodies trigger.

The pearl Bentley seems to be a more unified package.

The one I would own is the grey and white two door RR ute. Only because I would make it into a station wagon. (and fit normal sized wheels)

Ross, I too thought the two-tone El Camino-ish treatment of the coupe was quite fetching. In my case, I'd also use something more standard size in the wheel department, e.g. lower it to make access to the bed easier, but I'd leave the fairly tastefully done body work alone instead of making it into a two-door wagon. And nothing against wagons but my wife's Mercedes wagon (or estate for our island living compatriots) sets a very high standard, believe me. That said, I'm guessing that coupe-body is sitting on a truck frame.

Hi Omar,

I really like it as well.

Cant find any more pics of it though.

Amazing how these old cars can still look so elegant, then also, so modern, up to date & mean in the process.

Cant find any more images of the upside down white Shadow either.

Look how far back and the overhang the Shadow has on the trailer.

And not Yeovilton as the last award with a RR Shadow was with a tie up with the phantoms.
The car was a gift, did not last long though.
From memory the car did not have the compliant suspension and barrow rolled down Sherborne hill.
It was totalled.
Also the wrong time of year for the rain bow!

Thought it was Bristol but having flown in there with the sloping runway in a Cesna 172 years ago the picture does not ring any bells.
At a guess I think it is Heathrow

your car looks lovely exactly as it is. The colours are magnificent. The mere thought of changing the colour of a car scares me. The whole car will have to be torn apart to make it happen properly. I would keep that car of yours exactly like it is. I think it looks fantastic.

Hi John.
The Shadow built before August 1972 did not have compliant suspension this was mainly due to the use of cross ply tyres. The cars suspension at the time was designed just for them.
Fitting the then new radial tyres steel or nylon braced caused other problems that were and were not cross ply related.
To address the failings RR developed the compliant suspension this removed the harsh ride and tyre noise with a far better steering feel and more for its day.

Will find out more of the cars accident, but if I am not mistaken the car was returned to RR with the end result helping them on up dating the cars suspension!

Airfields Bristol I should have said hump not slope.
This is runway 27 known as the "Bristol hump".

PS no pain again, will not speak to soon though.

RE: 2002 Azure

Arrived in US this past Saturday. Our Bentley showed up at 7 PM via transporter. Great guy, has a two car enclosed trailer. The car is everything I thought it to be...absolutely gorgeous inside and out.

I've been online searching for an owners manual, as there was not one enclosed within the car. I figured most things out, however still want one. Did find one in Italian, however prefer English Version.

Also, no keys to manually unlock doors or boot in case of battery failure, Did read how to get in boot after removing rear seating etc. To have manual keys made would be my preference. Can that be done by providing a lock smith the ID # of vehicle.
If the hood ever gets stuck in the down position is there a way to gently raise it manually ?

I did send Omar a pvt message pertaining to the above, just in case he has an extra 02 Azure manual floating around that could be purchased.

Thx for all your continuing support.

Todd
PS: Would love to share a picture of my new ride within this blog..How do I do that as I don't see any attachment link.

Ok Sorry...I have the key situation figured out. Scratch that. Just discovered the transport guy thought he had to pull the bonnet latch pull to release E-brake. It's snapped off totally.

I see the mechanism under LH side of dash, however when engaging by pulling out, bonnet refuses to open. What might I be doing wrong ? Will try and trace cable or is it electronic to open. Sure wish I had an owners manual !! Will go on Utube to see how it opens....hopefully. Todd

Todd,

To post images on forum, use minimum resolution 300dpi for clarity/sharpness and resize to 640 x 480pixels [landscape] or 480 x 640pixels [portrait].

The posting procedure is included in the Formatting sub-topic under DOCUMENTATION in the LHS menu on the following forum page:

http://au.rrforums.net/cgi-bin/forum/discus.pl

Just scroll down to "Images, Attachments, and Clipart" under "Other Formatting" and use the image or attach command line as appropriate to the type of file you wish to upload. The method is old and clunky commensurate with the age of the forum software but it becomes easier once you use it several times.

If you have any problems, please PM me with the details through the forum and I will take you through the process step-by-step.

Todd,

When uploading images, always use the enter key to insert a space between the end of the text and the first image.

When multiple images are being uploaded, hit the ENTER key twice; this will stack the images with a space between each image down the page making them easy to view. Hitting the enter key once stacks the images across the page requiring scrolling across the page to view them as happened in your post above - I fixed this for you by using the double enter fix.

As I mentioned above, it becomes automatic after a few posts with images.

David

Thx to all for the cudo's regarding my photo's. I purchased the Bentley in W. Palm Beach Fl, then transported it to our residence located in Colorado.
2002 with 24,000 miles. Planning on using her as a daily driver throughout this Summer.

And David...Again, many thx for straightening out my error in uploading the photo's. U B the man !!!

Anyone have a schematic diagram of the bonnet pull mechanism from the pull handle up to the release.
No great shakes as I will figure it out once I cram myself in the foot-well.

Happy Motoring,

Patrick, more info on compliant suspension would be nice but to preclude further hijacking this thread I started one with that title in the Silver Shadow section.

Todd, lovely car. Glad you sorted opening the hood. Have you considered contacting the previous owner and asking about the manual? I mention this because I prefer having it on a bookshelf instead of within the glove box. I once forgot to send it along with the car I sold and called the new owner instead of tossing it. They happily came to fetch it. Good luck, pal.

Hello John, Amazing what you can find online as I've been trying to contact the owner in several different ways. He has a non-published #,however his fax line is in service. So I fax him on the subject of the OM. Two months latter he emails me back reiterating that the Bentley is a wonderful car and wished us well with no response regarding the OM. The gent is 87. I'm not sure of his mental state of mind.
I now have his home address and recently sent same request as well as emailing him periodically with no response.
Bentley of Denver will order me one $1,300.00. I've found Azure OM"s online. however not the exact year....1996, 1999. 2000, and a 2003 Azure Mulliner. Similar in price or more than the dealer. I'll probably just order one...no biggie.
Thank's John,
Todd

Here's an odd one. My indie mechanic had this on the rack when I stopped by. It is a four door Corniche. The only one made, so he says. the body lines say Corniche, as well as the boot badge. Could do without the gold trim IMO.

I've never even heard of a 4dr Corniche.
Part of me thinks Bentley could have run with it successfully for an 'SY' Continental Flying Spur (chrome bumpers and uprated engine, of course).

I have asked an expert, and he is also unaware of this model.

I'm thinking custom job?

If it's possible to sneak a look at the plate on the Cornadow/Shadiche the records at RREC would tell more?

I like it and I usually don't like the later non original "safety" bumpers.

I agree with David badge engineering custom job.
I have never see a shadow one with air grills having a later plastic safety bumper yuk.
It may be a good cut and shut or what ever but not for me.

It looks like a trim moulding. Something you would never see on a factory body IMO. If the car is still there this weekend I will try to take better pics.

Does the car have a vinyl roof?

If so, this could be the reason for the trim section.

That Shaniche Cornadow seems to be a definate "cut and shut" job. An unhappy Shadow front end welded, grafted and bogged to an equally unhappy Corniche rear.
Complete with plastic bumpers and ankle freezers!.
Really amazing.

These kits were produced in the 70s and 80s by A&A Fiberglass until Rolls Royce's lawyers found out about them.

I knew someone in Atlanta who had a Rollswagen (as he called it) along with a collection of RRs. You can see the front of a Spirit/Spur in this photo:

RW Rollswagen

This one was actually reconstructed using parts from one that ended up in the junk yard. There were apparently very few (under 50) of these things made using the A&A kits before Crewe's lawsuit put that to a stop. Ric reports that they were forced to crush all existing kit inventory as part of the settlement.

Like It !!! I have access to a great auto body shop within our La Punta, Manzanillo, Mexico neighborhood. These guys can do anything from custom paint jobs to full collision repair. I may entertain myself and search out a VW Bug and get an estimate on how many pesos to put one together. Great ride for the wife to go to the market...LOL That is if I can convince her that our Escalade gets poor mileage going to and fro.... Todd

Mark,

Yes, but the Custom Cloud had absolutely no "cute factor" whatsoever.

In the Rollswagen family I really prefer the ones that used the tall, thin, more Cloud-like grille and kept the original single headlamps. The proportions in that iteration are spot on for what they're trying to imitate.

All right... Which one of you ordered the Cloud 1?

Ross, I'd take that in a heartbeat! I always wanted to take an S2 Bentley and install fully modern Turbo R running gear. GO, STOP, and HANDLE with the classic look.
