On Pawn Stars ( a las Vegas pawn shop)

1970 LWB Shadow with division.
The car was a present from a tv company for his tv show, which was a huge success.

The present owners wanted $350k. So Rick Harrison the shop owner got an expert in.

He said the car is original and drives as it should. He then said that last year another ex cash RR had sold for $50k
The seller dropped to 200k. Rick refused it and the seller drove off.

Ignoring the Cash connection I reckon 25 to 30k at a pinch. Black vinyl black leather and black coachwork. It even had black tyres. Rear air con. Quite nice neads a respray but perfectly usable.

I see this a lot someone has am ex famous person RR and they imagine telephone numbers. Johnny Cash had lots of cars. And lots of guitars.

A few years back a guy brought a 1982 Ford Escort which HRH Diana Spencer owned till 1984. He restored to as new, and he put a high reserve on it and the bids didn't even get a quarter of way. The car was used by Diana when she worked in a nursery, that's about it no redeeming features. There is a market for early 1980 cars but it's all below the £2000 mark for Fords and similar.
A famous owner is just a oh how interesting feature. Especially expensive cars because the famous are more likely to buy an expensive car.

There are exceptions. A guy in Somerset UK paid £1 million. For Clark Gable's Deusenburg
I have actually touched that car. It is used sometimes. He built a test track to drive his cars on. He has lots of sports cars every one is red.
Also a V12 Lagonda. And a few old RRs bunged in where in could fit them.

For UK people Haynes Motor Museum Sparkford Sommerset.
Curator is Mike Penn.

Straight into it with the Mr. T attitude (bad)

I pity the poor fool who paid £50K or so for the late Jimmy Saville's Cloud. That link makes it worth about the same as one limp lettuce leaf now!

That's a connection that could have the opposite effect, less money than not famous car.

I always thought that Seville was a creep, now I know why I thought he was a creep.

How the hell he got to run hospitals without a medical qualifications I will never understand.

Paying more for a RR because a famous person owned it is daft. Elton John for instance has had a few RRs and he sells them when he gets bored. A 30 year old car that was owned for a couple of years by a star, the other 28 years it was owned by non famous.

Jan that's a true but totally hilarious comment. But I just don't get why because some famous person owned a car, that that somehow makes the car worth more. I just couldn't give a damn about who owned it. I mean if you buy Elvis's Cloud is he just going to magically reappear and play Hound Dog for you?

I just would never pay a premium for a celebrity car.

Assuming that a celebrity owned car has been correctly maintained is a big mistake.

What about Elvis' first Cadillac? All the later owners have maintained it in the same condition as he sold it - complete with bullet holes in the dashboard where 'the King' got peeved and shot it!

I've worked on a few cars that should have been shot.

The all time worst was a Moscovich van. And I thought a bamford lister dump truck was bad. This van was even worse.

The van was a brand new demonstration van, the importer suggested the vans as a replacement for Ford Escort vans. Oh how we laughed as I stuck my fist in the massive gaps between the door and wing. Who needs opening Windows for ventilation.

Sometimes removing a cars patina ruins the car.

A well kept Old car to me is more representive of old cars than a car that is better than when it left the showroom.

I have seen cars like MGBs with RR quality paintwork. Originally the paintwork was just average and instead of getting a good 2 pack job they go mad and pay twice the price for a RR finish.
I would go for a good 2 pack job and then rag the car around Dorset country lanes having a bit of fun. Save the stone chips up and maybe have a body shop retouch every two years.

I covert 1959 4 door pillarless Cadillacs. The rear fins were a phallic design cul-de-sac. Any bigger would have looked like a rear wing on a milk float.

Remember the bullet hole transfers. They made one's for glass as well. And the golf ball stuck in the windshield was good. Fingers trapped in the boot lid was another favourite. Tiger tails tied to the gas cap.

Esso put a tiger in your tank.

I used to have a fluffy esso tail hanging off my guitar.

That's car porn.

I do like these in pastel colours especially blue.

If I remember correctly those fins are 42" from the ground.

These cars have a repution for poor handling.

Local to me is a 2 door in pink. It seems to go round corners and brake properly. I think the reputation of bad handling came from badly maintained cars.

The pink car is a well known car that often appears in the UK media.
In Dorset a wide left hooker is difficult to drive

you are right Bob. she drives like a barge. When I change the tyres from crossplys to radials, the handling will improve no end. It will go from 3% good to 6% good. That will be a 100% improvement in handling!!!

I bet the car is as comfortable drive as Mae West.
The rear end of the car looks better than Kim Kardashian.

Bob you don't understand, the gaps in the Moscovich van are an advanced form of Russian airconditioning such that it never needed regassing. Its amazing how many people love the fins on a 1959 Cadillac. A lot of those fins were cut off at one stage. Elvis evidently put a few slugs into his Jensen Interceptor because it wouldn't start and then he got in and it started which just shows guns and cars do mix. Don't know if the same technique worked on his TVs though. But I think all new cars should be shot along with the designers because they are all ugly and look the same. Ossy Osborne loved to come home from a concert grab a double barrel and modify his chickens and my best mates boss who owns a 200,000 acre cattle farm often clears his domestic pigs off the front lawn of the homestead with a pump action. It must be some type of stress relief

My original thought 7 years ago was to buy one of those, Omar. But not being able to find one at a decent price I started looking around for a decent RR/B again. The last time I'd considered one was in the mid to late 80's when the classic car market was at its most Bullish. As such basket cases requiring a complete restoration were fetching North of £5K with well fettled Rover P5B's hitting £10K or more. Any roadworthy E Type could fetch £100K at auction with provenanced ex race cars heading towards 7 digits. I eventually settled on a pristine Jaguar XJS with the V12 motah. That served me well for several years until it became impractical due to the need for a vehicle with a greater carrying capacity. God alone knows how the next owner treated it, but I heard that he lunched the engine in just 6 months despite me having spent £1K on an overhaul shortly before I sold it.

Then the organic fertilizer hit the air conditioning and many hopeful investors (spivs) lost the lot. Prices went into freefall and a lot of the partially restored vehicles were just finished off cheaply and thrown out to the public with often forged MOTs. Since then every time the used market tries to recover it just slumps back within months with little or no rise in the cost of a nice example of the marque.

My Shadow 1 was originally advertised on eBay for a very acceptable sum, so I went down a couple of days before the end of the auction to view/hear it running. The racket from the engine was absolutely dreadful! But there was something about it that just wouldn't let me walk away. I went around and around the car listening from every possible angle. Then it hit me. Exhaust gaskets! Yup; the 'B' bank exhaust gaskets were blowing. Nothing more, nothing less.

After winning the bidding I took the train down to collect it and drove it for the first time. Mind you it cost well over £80 to fill the fuel tank to get her home. That's right; in just a few miles it had become She! I ran her around town and to and from the continent for another 6 months before the noise required a set of new gaskets (£10 inc postage) from Flying Spares. 3 days work and she was quiet as a mouse in sneakers on shag pile carpeting. A couple of years later I added the LPG setup and since then she's only had the usual consumables changed, a full overhaul of the braking system, new tyres (ready for replacement again) and a new exhaust. Then I refurbished the door cappings.

As soon as the weather improves I'll be finishing the interior and exterior cosmetics. I've ordered a new (copy) Emily to replace the stolen one. I have the materials to tidy up the wing and door tops, upgrade the speakers to 6" coaxials, replace all the door wiring and even upgrade the LPG setup with a fully closed loop system. She lives again!

Mae West wasn't the greatest actor or a good looker but she sure had a wicked sense of humour which I admire. I believe she had interment relations with men 9 times a day with men 1/4 of her age till her death at 98.can't say that is true cos I've been married too long 34 years now and that just don't happen in real life A nice juicy steak and cold beer has more enjoyment and the ecstasy lasts longer. Nice looking cars of the 50's and 60's will be always be a bit of eye candy

Jan, you are right - the 59s are not cheap to buy anymore. I got mine at a steal. The owner was trying to sell it for 6 months but no takers at his price. 6 months later I offered him a swap with my Volvo P544 plus cash and accepted to have the car with failed brakes. In all I did well on the deal and now I have a work of art in my stable. when the deal was struck neither he nor I saw the other person's car. The whole thing happened by text messages until the day of the exchange and it all happened in 20 minutes sight unseen.

As far as I know with radials and new dampers a 1959 Cadillac may surprise one at how much better they handle.

If slightly bigger wheels are fitted with lower profile tyres so the diameter is the same this will stiffen the side walls. It will mean no original wheel trims unfortunately.

Also fit a rear sway bar.

These bits must be on the net somewhere.

Is this one air or steel springs.

Omar, I think if you put lower profile tyres on it you will totally ruin the cushy ride. When I drive my 1976 Cadillac Fleetwood fast around corners I enter the corner mildly fast then nail the thing flat out. Ok they tip a bit but you would be amazed just how quick they can corner. Nothing like an XJS Jag of course but I have been trashing large American cars for over 40 years. When you have 2.5 tons they dig in savagely and its a cool feeling if you have the stereo cranked to the max and your wife strapped into place. Yes she will scream at you but that's half the fun and I am too far away from you for her to scold me for this brilliant advice. Then while she is screaming at you you say "sorry dear I'll do it again" Whack it into reverse, floor it, it will smoke the rear tyres savagely, once back around the corner, hit the brakes hard, whack it back into drive floor it again and you should be able to smoke the sucker this time all the way around the corner. Only draw back is the hubcaps can come flying off so you should remove them first. Trust me, you will be surprised but make certain the tyres are in top shape. Yes Omar you too can be the cool hoodlum of the entire neighbourhood. Oh what fun.

I got a good look at a Nissan Juke. What was the designer thinking of. Just because a computer can draw lots of curves and bulges, there no need to actually make the thing. Where has the car artist gone?

Aston Martin
Jaguar
Bugatti
Ferrari
Mercedes

All were set up by men who could pick up a pen and in one smooth move describe the outline of a (once built) famous and beautiful car on the inside of a fag packet or on a table napkin. Sadly soulless computers are the only way forward these days in the pursuit for ever and ever better fuel mileage figures. With very few exceptions how many of us could stare at a car without seeing the badge and still be able to tell the make?

Yes Jan we live in the ghost of chosen times. The new cars are about as interesting as a rusty paper clip. Gone is romance of the fender. I have a easy solution when it comes to fuel economy. As I can do nothing about the price of the fuel at the bowser I simply ignore it. I don't even look at the bowser, I simply fill up and drive away. People think that because I have a RR, Jag and Cadillac that I am some breed of show off. The fact of the matter is I have these cars because I like the look of them myself and as for their fuel economy I could not give a toss. My mantra is that luxury and economy are two things that have never been successfully mixed regardless of the simplistic waffle car manufacturers like to throw out there. Well unfortuneately, we may be the last generation to drive these cars. Politicans world wide are in bed with car manufacturers, financiers, bankers and insurance companies. There was a advertisement here a about a decade ago and it showed a Jaguar etype with the wheel off and also a new Toyota Celica and the caption was something like "The dream and the reality" If found the advert to be insulting to my intelligence. If they wanted to be honest they should have shown the Jaguar with a for sale sign of a hundred grand and a picture of the Celica at the wreckers with a bill of $100 to dispose of it. Still that life.

"I don't even look at the bowser, I simply fill up and drive away"

Well if we could do that we wouldn't care about the price of fuel either. Unfortunately the police would soon catch up with us.

Petrol in the UK has gone down to 106p. But neither can I do anything about price, so I don't care or worry. It's very easy I give them a bit of plastic and the bank adjusts the figures on my bit of the bank. It's all just numbers.

Enjoy the cheap fuel while it lasts - it will be price gouging as usual once the US shale oil extraction industry is convinced to join the cartel, increase price and restrict output to stabilise these prices.

Interesting automotive LPG prices do not appear to be following the petrol price reductions at least in Australia.

The reasons I've read for the cheap oil price is Saudi wanting to put pressure on the Iranian economy and the US, which has influence over Saudi, wanting to put pressure on the Russian economy for it's perceived hostility to Ukraine. The spin off of course is other countries are also feeling the effect, like the UK. Whatever the reason, I agree, long term we will be paying more. I saw $2.00 a gallon for the first time yesterday (35 pence per litre in UK money)

Just saw some regular unleaded for $1.93 9/10 US and that is with about $0.39 per gallon direct tax. Natural gas boom was ignited around here a few years ago when gas got over $10US per thousand cubic feet. Drillers went wild with Johnny Mitchell's horizontal shale drilling and hydraulic fracturing and soon we had gas and natural gas liquids (oil) running out our ears. Til then we were building terminals to import liquefied natural gas; now we are building liquifaction plants to export. People thought they knew; turns out they dud not...

The oil well type oil producers are also trying to make development of potential shale gas sites uneconomical.

The original owner of my Silver Shadow according to the registration document was one Roger Moore. The rear seats would, however, appear to have never been used, which doesn't quite match 007's reputation with the ladies.
