A few days age I got an email from a friend in Melbourne telling me about a 1926 Phantom Hearse belonging to John Allison Monkhouse. He also sent some photos & it looks like a very impressive car.I believe that it will be on display at their forthcoming open day.

The other day I recieved some information about the 1926 Rolls Royce Phantom Hearse (68DC)belonging to John Allisson Monkhouse Funeral Directors. It looks like a really nice old car. A huge amount of work has gone into it"s restoration. The chassis was originally fitted with a Landaulette body. The hearse body was built by Woodall Nicholson on a 1921 Silver Ghost chassis (106AG).

Great photo's of 68dc Mark. A really good restoration job. I hope to see the car "in the flesh" myself one day.

For anyone who missed it, check out the RROCA's bimonthly journal 'Praeclarum', Issue 1-06 (February 2006), pages 4660-63, for a detailed, illustrated article about the restoration of this Phantom I hearse.
There is also a photo of the 1921 Silver Ghost, chassis 106AG, when it was fitted with the Woodall Nicholson hearse body that now adorns 68DC.

HI JUST READING ABOUT THE MONKHOUSE HEARSE., IT IS INTERESTING THAT THE FORMER GHOST HEARSE FROM
COOPER BROS IN URALLA (IN THE CLUB) MAY HAVE HAD A TWIN IN THE WALCHA AREA OWNED BY AN INDEPENDENT FUNERAL DIRECTOR.

Yes Jim, I have seen many Rolls-Royce hearses over the years, never being keen to ride in one unless I was the driver or at least an upright passenger. Quite a few funeral directors use R-R hearses and to contain costs I have heard that, among other things, they often operate with a skeleton staff.

Hello Jim, Yes, quite a few R-R hearses have been custom built over the years, however I have yet to see a Bentley variant which might be regarded as too "sporting"?. I seem to recall reading about a book (USA?) which chronicled hearses generally (as built by the various manufacturers) and would expect that R-Rs would feature fairly prominently therein. Interestingly, you might be aware that a major supplier of R-R/B parts, originally established his business by parting out/"wrecking", worn out hearses. Apparently no one wanted them "as-is" (superstition etc.)but of course they remained an excellent (and cheap) parts base with perhaps the rear area being the only commercially unsaleable sections. Now he is one of the world largest suppliers of good used parts for R-R&B.

Hi Jim,

My apologies for the delay in posting this link as I didn't have time to find it in my archives when I released your post however better late than never.

This is a must visit site for anyone interested in R-R hearses and includes model/chassis number/coachbuilder data:

http://www.rrab.com/hearse/

Happy reading

Hi Jim,

One of our NSW branch members has a Panelcraft UK hearse [estate for the superstitious, station wagon for the "great unwashed"!!] conversion of a Shadow I which was previously advertised for sale in this forum.

Use the search facility and type in "SRH4032".

Hi Jim,
We have a long standing member of the Victoria Branch of the Australian club who runs a funeral business that has specialised in Rolls-Royce hearses and mourners' cars. This business has been in his family for a number of generations.
If you contact me directly (email: girob@bigpond.net.au), I will give you his email address so that you can contact him directly for more information, history and pictures.

G,day & a happy 2005 to everybody. I called into the National Motor Museum at Birdwood in the Adelaide Hills the other day. While there I checked out the 'Whot a way to go ' exhibition that they have on at the moment. It is about the development of hearses in Australia. Sadly it do'es not include a Rolls Royce Hearse but it do'es contain some very nice cars & is well worth visiting.

I have had some very interesting information regarding Rolls Royce Hearses on this forum which is wonderful, but I was wondering if anyone has ever come across a Bentley Hearse? These seem to be rather thin on the ground.
