I often hear reproduction and replica used interchangeably. Replica means made by original company. Reproduction means made by anybody. This means that a 1925 Bentley! that has been made from new parts can only be a reproduction, never a replica because that Bentley went bust in 1931. } (Message approved by david_gore) | ||

Surely if it's made by the original company it is neither a replica nor a reproduction. It's genuine. Even if it's a copy of an obsolete model. | ||

Similarly it must be genuine if all the parts are OEM components. But what if the basic car is original while many parts have been replaced with non OEM, but re-manufactured ones to OEM specifications? Where do you draw the line? When told that my Shadow had a 100 litre LPG tank in the boot, a friend of a friend claimed "It's no longer a Rolls Royce!" Similarly where can I get the original fitment cross-ply tyres? | ||

If Jaguar were to make a new E type that is the same as a say 1963 E type then because it is not a production car, then that car is a replica. If eagle jaguar make an E type then the car is a reproduction. For a car to be either a reproduction or a replica the whole car would have to be made including And especially the chassis or body shell. A good example are MG heritage MGB body shells these are reproduction not replica. Because MG heritage is not MG but a different company. Fitting non approved bits to genuine factory made production cars doesn't change the cars status. Say Lucas remake an old design of Lucas dynamos these are then replicas. If Bosch made Lucas dynamos then it's a reproduction. The DVLA (UK driver and vehicle agency) also use the above definition and so do the courts. The bloke who said that a RR with lpg is a t**t. IIRC Eagle (or at least one 'maker') start with an original E-Type and chuck all the bits that can be upgraded: Mostly suspension and brakes. After a few engine tweaks it's unleashed on the roads to catch its own supper. |
