Hi I am looking for a daily driver Silver Shadow - a car I have loved for many years. I have read as much as I can find and have decided to purchase a car in good condition rather than attempt a restoration. I would like a car that is in original condition. I am considering a 1969 MPW coupe at the moment, CRH7297. I am told by the seller that the car has the 6.75 litre engine. It is my understanding that this engine was not fitted until chassis number 8742, thus indicating it is not the original engine. If this is true the purist in me is not particularly interested in this car. If someone who is knowledgable could comment on whether this car would have originally been fitted with the smaller engine it would be much appreciated. Also, is there an easy way to determine which capacity engine a car has? I ask this as the seller seems to have limited knowledge about the car (a worrying sign!) and I suppose it is possible it has the 6.2L unit With thanks Marcus

Hi Marcus, The SY's from 72 onwards got the 'new' 6.75 V8. Earlier cars had the 6.2. Now thats from my limited knowledge. As for the power differences between the units.... other than a bit more mid range torque its not much that you would be able to easily tell by driving. From my recollection the increased cc was primarily done to allow the cars to cope with more stringent emmissions being added to the motors thus still maintain performance. Thus the extra 450cc was essencially provided to make sure the car still performed 'adequately'with the emmissions in situ.... im sure most cloud 2,3 and S2,S3 owners know that the older 6.2 unit with no emmissions control really does haul along smartly!!! I'm not sure if this helps you but yes the 69' SY should have a 6.2 V8 if its an original car. How can you tell a 6.2 from a 6.75 by looking at it in situ in the car.... I have no idea as the look of the engine with its marvellous black enamel rocker covers has been the same since inception, bar of course fuel injection being added in the mid 80's but I'm sure some scholarly person on this forum will know! cheers and good luck finding your 'daily driver' J |

In my opinion if you wish to use the car for everyday motoring it would be better to seek out the most recent Shadow/T you can afford, ideally a Series II car. These are a more modern car with rack and pinion steering and improved ventilation system. Problems with the rack car be overcome by competent mechanics. My cars (Shadow II and Corniche III) had racks fitted in 2002/3. Shadow II has 624,000 kms on the clock and is used as a daily driver.Racks were overhauled by Col Robinson here in Brisbane and fitted by NBS Services (local R-R specialist). The car you are looking at should have the more robust 3 speed auto transmission but would still have the 6.2l engine. Two door Shadow FHC are usually a "tighter" car than the 4 door of similar age. Hope this helps
