I have a 1967 Silver Shadow that has low compression in the cylinders. Blows a lot of black smoke with sump oil and has very little power(some of these problems maybe LR petrol related). After a few hours driving the oil pressure goes to zero and the oil light comes on even with adequate oil. Everybody says it needs a complete engine rebuild as the cylinder bores & cylinders are worn out. A Rolls-Royce specialist quoted me $20,000 to recondition the motor and another $10,000 in labour. Is there any cheap way out ? |

Another option is to replace the engine with one from some place parting them out. Someone in the US had that done for about $9000 not too long ago. The quote seems very high, by the way. Quotes I've heard are in the $20k range for the entire job, labor included. |

Hi Steve,
Need some more information. How many miles has the motor done? What sort of oil are you using? Black smoke is fuel not oil, usually blue smoke for oil burning. When you say low compression, how are you measuring it? What is the measurement? If the oil pressure light is coming on, there are several reasons for this. If the car needs pistons, rings, and a rebore, $30000 is way too much. If it needs bottom end bearings, this is where the dollars are. Are you in Sydney? There are quite a few people who could do the work, jsut need to ring around.
Interested to hear how you are getting on, zero oil pressure does not sound good!

Martin's right in what he says.I sahould connect an oil presure guage to the engine and check. Because the pump surely can't stop pumping just like that. Here in the UK an engine is around £5000. |
