G'day! Might anyone be kind enough to confirm the correct routing & flow through the heater on Shadow1. It seems that return to pump/bottom hose union (suck in other words!) is taken from top of matrix, with flow to heater consequently entering at bottom (via tap). If this is correct it seems to contradict my understanding that hot water, whilst dissipating heat, must gain mass and fall, as would be the case for instance with a gravity c/heating system etc. and of course the vehicle cooing radiator. Advice and thoughts would be appreciated. Many thanks

The difference in specific gravity for water at different temperatures is immaterial for a pumped system though some old (and small) cars such as the Austin 7 used the thermosyphon effect instead of a water pump. The various pipes and hoses are positioned to prevent coolant aeration or the development of air locks. This is why the coolant is taken from the bottom tank of the radiator and the top of the heater matrix. See the diagram in Issue 61 of Tee One Topics. Radiators are not always mounted vertically, some are horizontal with a tank on either side. |
