Although I've had this car for sometime, I have not had to use the wipers until now,as I usually avoid the rain as it means a lot of cleaning to do afterwards.Sounds pathetic I know. Anyway, I noticed that with the wipers in operation, the drivers side wiper left an area unwiped between right front of me and the right hand pillar. At rest they are parallel and just above the scuttle ( I think thats what its called).I set the wipers away from the screen and and turned them on to observe the action which seemed OK, but when I turned them off they did not go into the parked position. I am wondering if there is a fault in the internal parking switch which would have left the wipers up on the screen, and that someone has reset the wipers lower to overcome this but as a result they no longer give the full sweep as designed. I am reluctant to remove the wiper motor if there is another solution. Any assistance would be appreciated | ||

Could you tell us your chassis number. I shall check, but I think that most SZs are the same. Certainly, 20,000-series SZs and later are as follows. In that case, the parking switch is under the middle of the scuttle. The one in the motor is the intermittent pause position switch made up f a disc and metal brushes. The metal tab on which the park switch is mounted is often bent by someone without knowing it. You mat find all this in the Technical Library. RHT. | ||

To be clear, if the parking switch tab is bent, then the wipers may park too high on the screen or not at all. It may be straightened by hand. RHT. | ||

Richard ,thanks for the prompt response, I have downloaded quite a bit from the technical library, eg the schematics and component location, but the text suggested that the parking switch is internal,but perhaps I got that wrong. Your assessment sounds much more hopeful. The Chassis number is 22650 | ||

Peter, also check that the reverse park is working. Take the wiper cover off and check that when you turn the wipers off, the motor does 1 turn in the opposite direction. There is a 'ratchet' disc that should do a 1/2 turn and change the effective length of the linkage. This disc should pull the wipers down to the park position - Make sure that is not sticky. (often missed service item). | ||

Thank you Richard and Paul,your assistance is much appreciated and my problem is solved. The motor was not doing its 1 turn in the opposite direction and when I touched the microswitch it then did.The sliding part that actuates the switch was, as suggested ,sticking. Once cleaned and lubed everything worked well, with the wipers trying to make their way through the scuttle when parking. They have now been relocated on the spindles and all is well. Thanks again |
