Hi All, Could somebody give me some advise before taking sump off, On the shaft that comes out of the transmission to connect the lever to gear change actuator, Is the seal inside the gearbox or doe's it fit outside ,only if it goe's outside it is missing or broke up. This is a 1980 silver spirit. Thankyou Rodney |

Hi Rodney, It goes in from outside the box, but you need to remove the shaft to get the old one out. The machining on the box has two steps and the seal goes on the inner step so it may just look like it's missing ??? It's a lip type seal in a metal shell. Not such a bad job on a ramp, but messy because of the dripping oil! |

Rodney/ I hope you are aware that the instructions for the seal replacement etc are included in the workshop manual which is in the Technical Library complete with the spare parts list and all the numbers. The time to change the seal is when it leaks. There are a number of other seals on the box which probably should all be done at the same time - all without removing the box. |

Do a transmission service if not done recently. To be changed when dropping teh sump: Filter / Sump gasket / Filler dip stick o'ring / suction tube o'ring. These do come as a kit from R-R (expensive though ) - or go to an automatic transmission specialist and get them separately. Be careful when getting the old shaft seal out because it's tight and the casing is very soft. |
