I don't know if this relates at all, but I had the engine cut out the other day, and my problem was rusty B3 ( I think ) fuse holder contacts.
Going along great, perhaps hit a bump, and contact was lost resulting in cuising to the side of the road.

I assume you have a naturally aspirated car which is fitted with a Bosch K Jetronic system. If the manual is needed let me know and I'll get a copy to you.

Hi Bill,
As a matter of interest I have the BOSCH 8400 injection system tester with the harness for this model that David Gore referred to in earlier posts(doesn't everyone), it is great for quick diagnosis of the electrical control system ,and when used in conjunction with the special pressure gauge and Dyno(now you do have one of those don't you) allows a full dynamic check.

Hi Craig,
I know its a bit late to respond to your original request, but I thought that better experts than me might have solved your problem for you.
I had a 1986 Bentley Mulsannne with this exact problem, and it turned out to be a clogged filter INSIDE the fuel tank. I noted you 'did' the filters, but did you check the tank filter?
This is the cheapest and easiest solution before getting involved in electronics, etc.
Problems like this are commonly found where ethanol has been added to petrol, as the ethanol is an effective descaling agent removing years of accumulated crud from the walls of the fuel tank.

I have a 1989 Silver Spirit and when driving have an intermittent problem in losing power to the engine.

I have tried everything to correct this problem including changing the fuel injectors and still this problem persists. When the problem happens I have to quickly pull over and switch of the car and then restart, the problem goes away. I thought this was a fuel problem and then flushed tank, changed fuel pump/filters, changed injectors and the like.

On reading the parts manual for this car SCAZ – 26158 I notice the following “Electronic control unit fuel injectors” part no UD70265, would this have a part to play in the problem. As I have mortgaged my house for repairs I don’t want to buy/replace anything else until I am sure this will resolve the problem or does anyone else have ideas or experienced this problem.

Craig,

I presume your car will have a plug module for hooking up an engine monitoring computer somewhere in the engine bay - if so, a visit to your local fuel injection specialist and a download to his computer should identify the cause of your problem. I suspect you may have a faulty sensor somewhere in your system and the download will quickly identify the culprit.

Thanks, looks like back to Rolls. Hong Kong doesnt have these type of specialist other than actuall dealer garages and most of them including Rolls Royce seem to forget what an engineer is about and just paint over teh problem rather than resolve.

I found the plug in, short of hooking up a laptop modified one to hook up, to it where can you get the software. Sorry I am a software/electronics engineer so If I can build the bugger I rather that.

Hi Craig,

I think your car will have a Bosch system and there is a specific plug required to fit your socket - you can buy the diagnostic units from specialist automotive tool suppliers in the USA/Europe/UK that come with a variety of adaptors to fit the various brands of engine management systems. I am not aware of any generic software that can be used on an ordinary PC but a search of the Internet might reveal something [if you do find anything, would you please send me the details using the UTILITIES/CONTACT tool on the LHS of the page].

One of our members owns a transmission repair business and demonstrated a chip reader/reprogrammer they purchased for adjusting engine/transmission management systems in current models at one of our technical sessions - this unit is absolute state-of-the-art for current cars and cost AUD15,000 including all the adaptors. My understanding is the older read-only units cost around USD400 + the cost of the specific adaptor for your system.

I think you will find an independent specialist somewhere in HK who can do the diagnosis for you - I would talk to the "hot-up" section of the trade who do high-performance mods/tune-ups for the local "rev-heads" as they will know who has these units.

Hi Craig,

Try the following link to Mainline Auto at Kingsgrove in Sydney for a Windows-based diagnostic unit that is probably exactly what you need. They are about 15 minutes from where I live and I will call in in the next couple of days to have a talk to them. In the meantime, you need to count the number of pins in your connector to see if they have an adaptor.

Craig,

I managed to get to Mainline today to get the prices - they were very helpful but we have hit a snag with the availability of data specific to your car and the cost of the system is too high for a DIY mechanic;

The prices for the various components are:

Electraspec for Windows: AUD995 + GST
Electrajet t-100: AUD5770 + GST
Electrajet CSM: AUD6036 + GST
Connector Harness: AUD400/500 + GST each depending on connector

Testing requires replacement of the engine ECU with the complete unit which then does a full diagnostic evaluation. The technical guru at mainline thinks your car will not have a full ECU but work off 4 sensors only [this would explain your 4 pin plug] - in this case you can use a multimeter to read the pin voltages however you will need access to a dealer service bulletin to find out what readings you should get and what pin relates to what sensor. The most common failure is the air mass flow sensor which measures air flow into the system as this gets the most work. I would check out your air intake system for blockages/leaks, fix any problems and see what happens. You could contact Bosch and see if they can give you any help on your system regarding pin voltages/sensor relationships. You might also be able to source the sensor through a HK agent for Bosch if needed. Apparently Bosch sold a test unit for the 1980/1990 EFI systems designated as a Model 8400 and you might be able to find one of these second-hand.

Sorry this didn't work out as I expected however other readers on this Forum might have access to the necessary information on the pin readings to get us out of trouble.

Sorry but the connector has 7 pins not 4 as previously stated, blind in the dark. I will try all the airflow stuff first and see what happens. I have recently bought the workshop and parts manual for this car so will be reading this over the weekend.

Cost don’t look too bad given I am just about to buy over a garage with a couple of mates specifically to get a repair shop that actually resolves problems (Rolls Royce and other high-end toys) so will be looking at the analysis tools anyway. I found another useful source for some tools so will be looking at those too; guess I have just picked up another hobby.

There is a lot of build it yourself lads here who own a few rollers and need somewhere to fix rather than Rolls. I want to open a do-it yourself shop and provide the right tools and let the people get on with it, that way we get a good brain session going of someone has a serious technical problem. I need a lot of work on mine since last few years its been working like a dream but lately all the problems are coming oil leaks (good old steering column, source a replacement reconditioned one rather than change the seals), loss of power, transmission and other weird issues. Now looking for door seal kit UT13535PB costs here A$390.00 per door which is rip off, so if you have an alternative supplier would be grateful.
