Hi Has anyone used Smith and Allen transmission fluid. They appear to have been around some a long time and seem to get good reviews on the web. Mulsanne S gm400 gear box. Many thanks, |

It really, really doesn't matter who makes any automotive fluid. If the company is reputable, and this one is, you always look to the spec of the fluid your manufacturer put in the car when it was shipped from the factory and then make sure to get one that meets or exceeds that specification. Engineers, including those at Crewe, never designed "to product" but "to specification" and very often the actual product of choice could change over time depending on what manufacturer could and would supply to the needed specification at the lowest cost (and, yes, that certainly applied at Crewe, too). What are the ATFs made by Smith and Allen and what industry specifications are met by each? By the time the Mulsanne S hit the streets I believe at that time the Dexron-III spec was the most current. There have been succeeding ones that are backward compatible with Dex-III, and the Dex-III spec is no longer officially licensed, though many makers still make Dex-III spec compliant ATF. For myself, these days Valvoline Max-Life is my ATF of choice. It meets or exceeds virtually any ATF specification you care to name, making it an ideal "one size fits virtually all" fluid to have on your shelf. Thanks Brian. I wondered about using Dexron 6 but I think that I'll stick with Dexron 3 |

Darryl, You're quite welcome. I went back and checked when the Mulsanne S was made (1987 to 1992) and then what the latest Dexron spec was at the time. I was mistaken in that it was still Dexron-II not III during that period: ---- Between 1987 and 1992, the most current Dexron ATF spec was Dexron IIE, which was issued in 1991 and updated the earlier Dexron IID spec. Dexron III did not arrive until 1993, so it was not part of that 1987–1992 window. ---- Of course Dexron-III is entirely backward compatible with Dexron-II, so anything that meets or exceeds that spec is just fine. And there are heaven only knows how many ATFs being made that meet the Dexron-III specification even though it's no longer used for licensing. |

Darryl, I have used Dexron3 in all of my Crewe cars for years. There is an article on this site regarding ATF's by Richard Tracy. Mark |

Hi, I've usually used Dexron 3 in the Bentley I just wondered about Smith and Allen oils. The more I read about Dexron 6 I concluded that, although being backwards compatible' it probably wasn't suitable for the Mulsanne S. Darryl |

Darryl, I f I remember correctly, Richard recommended D4 should only be used on a rebuilt, clean box. I dont think D6 existed then. I have used Smith and Allen oils and Westway oils and Rye oil and still do. Westway now produce an extensive range of "classic oils" at very competitive prices. Mark |
