No one is answering, if someone wants to correct me, they may. If the heater tap is closed, it stops the coolant from circulating into the matrix, and that's it. If the cooling system is not healthy, and you direct some of that heat through the matrix, and the car runs cooler, then you need to find the source of the overheating problem. The usual; partially blocked rad, and/or faulty thermostat. I don't know if the V8's had silting problems with the aluminum blocks and the cast wet-liners. I suppose if the engine wasn't looked after, there would some corrosion going on to the point where the block is filled with oxidized aluminum and cast iron (or what ever the liners are made from). | ||

Yep, heater tap is there to allow coolant flow through the heater matrix when the tap is open or stop the flow through the heater matrix when closed. Coolant should flow through the engine cooling passages irrespective of whether the heater tap is open or closed. | ||

I am getting ready to install replace my heater tap for the third time in 10 years. Has anyone found any type of improvement for this sorry Bosch part? There was a post a number of years ago from Richard Treacy where he contemplated removing the tap all together and letting coolant into the heater matrix constantly. The idea being that as long as the flaps were closed the AC would still be able to cool the cabin in summer. I don't know if this was ever tried. Also wondering if any improvements were ever made to the part itself in aftermarket form as I see Introcar and Flying Spares are selling. (Message approved by david_gore) |
