Anyone know how to diagnose the culprit behind the "Spark Timing Sendor" code/message from the Check Engine Light on 1990 Bentley Turbo R X32551? The actual sendor has been replaced, but I still get a periodic code after long freeway run and then bringing to a stop. Thanks,

This is just my opinion for what it is worth. The flash codes and the more modern codes can sometimes be only a pointer in the direction of the fault. It is best to test the item and all connections including earths first. Other probs[ecu]can be caused by spikes and there are many unexpected weird causes. However saying that, what code number is being collected and has the the code been cleared after the sendor replacement, i take it the crank sendor? Have you checked for more than one code. Also the more modern systems when units fail can go into default and run on other sensors sendor. The knock sensor can from memory bring up some spark timing related codes. This may account for the intermediate code after some long runs. Not sure if you mean the car then stops with the fault? Hum thinking !!!!!!!!!!!!

In the dark here without any above answers. However will try again. 1. connection fault as above if the new sendor was not faulty. flash code,4,3.1.2. Have you reset and what are the stored codes if any when checked after the long run,ie hot fast run. 2.possible knock sensor out of its set parameter. 3. Also suspect you may have a low kv to one of the plugs, ht etc fault maybe. check if code 2.1.2.3 comes up at all. This takes me back to the quality Mercedes cars testing the computors with flash codes. However the new "S" class, now that is quality again now.

Patrick, Thanks for the response. Current codes are 4431 (Idle Speed Control), 4312 (Spark Timing Sendor) and 2344 (Mixture Control Rich)--- in that order. Again, I only get codes after long run at freeway speeds and only at idle, for example at a traffic light. I can't help but think these are related. What do you think? Where is the best place to begin? Thanks so much for your help. It's greatly appreciated. Rick

Rick sorry have not been back as i have been on the busy side. However have had much thoughts on this and first i would check the air filter. Then i would maybe think an injector is leaking the ecu maybe desperatly trying to reduce the fueling when on hot idle, but this may not be the cause without in house testing. I would feel that with the codes given it would be best if you could get a print out [four gas] of the emission values hot. first natual idle test data, then a fast idle test data. This may then get us on the right track first. |
