Chasing a rather loud periodic thumping knock I found the right hand exhaust pipe lying on one of the rear axle radius rods. Then found that the second last mount for the pipes which is held by a single 7/16AF bolt which is screwed into a captive nut in the floor of the car had pulled clean out. The other side had apparently suffered the same fate but was repaired by some genius who welded extensions on the bracket and refastened it with half a dozen roofing screws!

The car is a 1985 production has no rust and used regularly. The solution was a decent plate on the inside of the car a bigger bolt and a thick washer. Apparently this is not uncommon. Progress of this fatigue can be easily checked by pulling the rear seat out when the captive nut can be seen just under the bottom of the squab.
