My friend has a 96 Continental R (like mine) which has had lots of work done to it. The engine and gearbox were removed from the car and then put back. The car drives well but the gearbox does not work properly. It appears to be stuck in 2nd gear and the sport button does nothing.
Any suggestions of where to start looking?

Omar it is beyond my capabilities to offer any advice, but it might help others if the reason for the engine and gearbox removal were known?

Richard.

Often it will default to 2nd if there is a problem.

Has your daughter forgotten to plug in a loom or anything?

Check all the fuses as well.

Have you got a diagnostic reader nearby?

the reason for removal was replacement of front subframe.
I wonder if indeed a plug or fuse may be the issue. Where do I check for fuses other than the fuse box?
I have an OBD II reader. No transmission codes have been spat out.
I have a myriad of P300 codes but no transmission ones.
Thanks
Omar

Dear Jean-Pierre,
I have not. do you recommend any?
The car has been to a transmission expert who have confirmed that the transmission itself is good. The connections to the car will be inspected next.
Thanks
Omar

Simply google ''4L80 troubleshooting''. More Forums (Fori) than you can possibly read though in one day. All for US cars, but it should be valid for the Bentley.
Also, is there no troubleshooting tree published for this car, such as for the TH400, stating on Page T21-1 in TSD4400?

Everything points at the car and not the transmission. I will update you when we have more information. Thanks for the support.

Thanks Michael.
The car went to a gearbox specialist and he said all is fine. It then went to Bentleys and they still have the car. The thinking is that the loom got pinched or pulled when the engine was taken out.
We are still looking.
Thanks
Omar

problem solved!!!!
lots of experts have looked at the car and all of them left the car confused and blaming unrelated possible faults. The car went from one place to the next. In the end it was a case of looking at the connector that clips onto the transmission control module under the steering wheel. Pin 55 did not have 12v. when I connected a 12v supply to pin 55 the transmission worked perfectly.
