I recently had the rubber boot replaced on the cruise control of my 1981 Silver Spur. It now works but it surges a lot and sometimes cuts out altogether. I would like to have a go at it myself if at all possible. Would anyone have any ideas and maybe pics for recognition please? |

It's most likely that either your ECU is faulty or your speedo sender needs attention. A weak speedo sender first shows up in faulty cruise control behaviour (surging, disengagement etc) before the fault is noticeable on the speedo itself. The speedo sender would respond to a good clean out of its diminuitive PCB, followed by laquering with an electronics-grade PCB laquer spray. It is readily removed from the transmission, and can be opened for careful cleaning by removing four screws on its cap. A replacement genuine ECU will cost you around A$450. However, an aftermarket cruise control can cost as little as A$100 complete, and if the ECU is not integral with the bellows on the new unit, then you could install the ECU alone. Aftermarket cruise controls are the norm to replace the pre-SSII mechanical units which are pretty naff. Later electronic-electric cruise controls (20,000 series cars) have a VDO unit similar to those in Holdens and Opels. |

Thanks for the info Richard. I was actually thinking about an after market option as I fitted one to my old banger Ford a few years ago and I have enjoyed a smooth trouble-free operation from it. Before I go there, I would like to attempt to fix the original first. As I am still unfamiliar with all the workings of 'Charles', I was wondering if there were any diagrams (photos) available for easy recognition? It would give me more confidence when attempting service of the offending item. Thanks again Richard. |

Hi everyone, I have a question, when going over bumps and holes etc I can hear a loudish rattle noise coming from the near side rear wheel area. I have removed the wheel trim to no avail. If I hit the tyre hard with my hand it makes the sound than as well. I feels as if somethings loose just in of the wheel. Any ideas ? Regards Glynn |

Hi Larry, Received the Cd's from you today (TSD 4400 and TSD 6167), being the Workshop manual and Parts manual respectively. I appreciate the promptness of your delivery, especially as they come fron the good old US of A. Anyone who owns a Spirit, Mulsanne of their derivatives, even if they don't particulary wish to work on the cars themselves, would do well to purchase these from Larry as they give you a detailed picture of their workings and would greatly help an owner when either working on the car themselves or dealing with a specialist mechanic. Considering how inexpensive these CDs are, you would be crazy not to get them. (Free advert) Many thanks Larry. Rob |

Hi Larry We are interested in getting a copy of the manuals for an RR Silver Spirit '86 and it seems as though you may be able to help. Please email me the details.

SA: Are you winding us up, or have you not looked at the online Technical Library on this very site ?
