Hi All Would any body know where I can look at a 1982 RR silver spirit ignition circuit diagram? Thanks Mike |

Hi Michael, The following link to the Australian Technical Library should contain the information you require: http://rrtechnical.info/sz/sz80.htm |

Hi David Thanks for the link but thats the first place I looked and I've looked until my eyes hurt under ignition there are just a couple of pages but no diagram? I looked here http://rrtechnical.info/sz/sz80/4400m/5.pdf Is there anywhere else I might find a diagram? Seems crazy the most important circuit isn't shown? The problem I have is it will start and run until key returns to run position. Thanks Mike |

Michael, does it die immediately, or run for a short time then stop ? If the later, suspect the oil pressure switch that controls the fuel pump. Easy check is to pull the wire off of the switch located on the oil filter assembly, and then start the engine and see if it stops. if it runs you require a new oil pressure switch ( same as Mini or Morris Minor ! ) Mark |

Thanks Mark It stops immediately the supply to the coil is lost but it says 12v on the coil so not sure if it should have a ballast resistor or not , not sure if the car has been messed about with. Cheers Mike |

It sure sounds as if the ballast resistor has either burned out or the electrical connections are bad. Given the to-and-fro it appears that it is now time to engage an autoelectrician or a R-R/B specialist . A new ignition module, uprated coil with internal ballast and fitting will probably cost less than $1,200 |

Thanks Richard I am an auto electrician but I would still like to see a diagram, must be one somewhere surely? At least then I would know how it should be. Thanks Mike |

http://rrtechnical.info/sz/sz80/szelectricha4.pdf The original control module is located under the left fender if I recall correctly. To replace that module with a factory one alone costs around $2,000 for the part but a complete replacement kit with the module, sensor and coil is available in Sydney for just $500. Add a bit for a rotor arm and distributor cap. One was fitted yesterday in the Blue Mountains to a similar Mulsanne. R. |

Many thanks Richard I couldn't find the diagram. So I was barking up the wrong tree as FS were listing a ballast resistor for SZ I thought that might be the problem ,but from what you and the diagram is saying is there is none. So why would it run in the start position but not in the run position mmmmm? I wonder if that fuse has blown? 10A 30a? Many thanks Mike |

The circuit does not appear to have a ballast resistor which is not unusual for electronic ignition. With the ignition on check for 12 volts at the coil + terminal. If not there the ignition switch may be the problem. |

Just a thought . . Early Spirits had the old OPUS ignition system with a ballast resistor fitted . . About 1983 on Nat Asp cars. Up to 06750 vin I think. Has your car got a module in the distributor or on the o.s. inner wing? The ballast resistor is an aluminium block on the rear of head A. |

Often the ballast resistor is more than a bit tricky to get eyeballs on. It's buried fairly far down and, if the exterior gets dirty it disappears into the shadows. Look way down between the firewall and the rear of the A head. When I had this thing out on SRH33576 I mounted it back higher up in case I needed to get to it again. Here's a picture: The aluminum housing is wrapped in a J configuration around the large, flat resistor block. Brian |
