Suddenly, neither of the inner headlamps on my turbo R illuminate. The one on the passenger side looks like it may be burned out. Are they wired (series?) so that if one fails the other won't work? Will regular old sealed beam bulbs work? They look the same. All info appreciated. |

They are wired parallel. If sealed beam then replace with the appropriate unit. Maybe as the bulb failed it blew the fuse. So check fuse first. H4 up grade are available for cars with sealed beams. Plus these can be further uprated. Also in the near future I reckon LED ones will be available. To remove the headlights. Remove outer trim that surrounds the head lamp. The lights are held to the headlamp bowl with a chrome trim ring. This had 3 slotted holes loosen the 3 cross head screws and turn chrome trim ring so the screws move from the slot to the hole. Then remove chrome trim ring and with draw head lamp. Note that there's a notch in the mounting that aligns the headlamp. Note that the slots are not equally spaced so take note of where the welded seam is on the chrome trim ring. The back of the headlamp has a plug. Wiring colour code Lucas. The main beam is blue with white tracer. Black is earth or negative. Blue with red tracer is dip beam. When refitting apply petroleum jelly to plug. Grease all the screws. Because this lot get the elements thrown at it. |

Robert is thinking of an earlier model car I think. Bill, would be easier if you say what year etc. Bulbs are usually accessible from the engine bay. Check the plug hasn't melted or corroded as well. Check the fuses as well. Do they come on when 'flashing' the headlamps. Depending on your car year, there is a latching relay on the left spring mount in the engine bay. |
