1984 Spirit Turn Signals...Won't unless the headlamps are ON, then only slowly/dimly.

Sorry: got a call from a friend who just traded for a Car with this issue. It's all new to him.

Opinions?

No ideas on the faulty turn indicators? I thought it strange they work dimly IF the headlamps are ON.

Randy,

This is a complete SWAG, but has he tried replacing the flasher? This is just so weird that nothing else "logical" pops to mind.

If the Spirit fuseboard is like that of the late Shadows, and they used the tiny rectangular Lucas flasher, you'll need to make pigtails to use a more commonly available flasher, even if just for testing purposes.

Illogical electrical faults like this are almost always caused by a bad earth connection. If an earth connection goes high resistance the current will take the easiest route to earth, which may be via another piece of equipment.

So I suggest you check the earth connections of the headlights and the direction indicators.

Bob,

Thanks for that little tidbit to be filed away in my mind.

Heaven knows these cars are well known for problems with earth/ground connections.

Brian, who likes having a list of reasonably simple "check this first" steps, particularly for electrical issues

Typical fault caused by bad earths is stop tail bulbs. The earth is lost the tail lights are fine because they are earthing via the stop filaments. Which are 21w. Once the stops lights are turned on the earth path is lost and tail and stop come on together dimly.

Headlights with double filaments do the same and go dim. Because the filaments are working in series.

Lucas earths are black in colour.
