Evening all - like Arnie, I'm back! Got another query - my 1984 Spirit 'Echo' (ECH 09680 - geddit?) drips oil. Too much oil. I've replaced the old cork rocker box gaskets with the new polymer ones (with new stand-offs) and that worked for a while, but oil loss has steadily increased again. This time I think it's leaking from the cam chest cover plate, between the heads. I think the original seal is a silk thread? Is that still used and available, or is there a better replacement? Am I right in thinking that all the air intake trunking and carburettors have to come off to get at the plate?

Has anyone done this, and could tell me the snags I may encounter, any tips, and what spares I will need. No doubt taking things apart will require new gaskets etc:. Thank you!

Rod Check the engine breather and gasket under the oil filler cap.I use Loctite 518 plus primer7649 to seal the cover. Also use 518 under the carby base.

Yes in order: PCV dismantle and clean up, then drive a bit. Other source can be the front cover and indeed the tappet chest, but in my experience, not so much as it's just some splah oil.

I would also check the engine sides: exhaust gaskets in mine were leaking a mixture of gases, condensation and oil until warm (not a head gasket issue) but crud.

Rod,
yes, as Lluis suggests, clean your flame trap(s). The Corniche has 2, I heard that the Spirit only has one. That solved my oil leaks via the oil pan gasket.

Hi guys, checked the engine breather and oil filler gasket, OK, exhaust gaskets OK, and I'm pretty sure the oil around the front cover is coming from the cam chest. Lluis, I'm not sure what the 'PCV' is? The oil on the floor is clean and clear engine oil. Assuming it is the cam chest cover that's leaking, what associated items will I need to replace when re-assembling, please? Good tip about the Loctite and primer, thanks Philip - I guess that replaces the silk thread?

Voila, the flame traps. Good luck with the dismantling.
