Dear Experts, have a new problem, the 'check gearbox' warning light comes on,it appears intermittent as its sometimes out on start up but more often than not its on all the time lately. If it is out then around 80KMH and/or driving for 5 minutes or more it comes back on.Gearbox functions normally when light out and up to 3rd gear when warning active.I have checked the fluid level with engine running as per manual and level within hatched markings.Any ideas or tips on this gratefully received.Brgds Nigel p.s. any where to get boot carpet????? |

You need to interrogate the computer to find the fault code. Your car is listed in the archives as a 1997 Model Year LWB Turbo R. Unfortunately I believe that the earlier friendly blink code diagnostic system was deleted for the 1996MY standard cars, and earlier for Contis, I think when the Zytek EMS was introduced, meaning that the fault diagnosis should be carried out only using a Mastercheck monitor. I suggest that you visit a Crewe dealer or specialist to have the diagnostics downloaded. Although the later cars are demonstrable superior in so many ways, it annoys me that the convenience of such things like the blink codes were eliminated by almost every car maker to foil us and to ensure that you visit a fully-equipped workshop each time the thing burps. Dear Nigel, Yes Absolutely. This is about your only real starting point. It is a cheap activity and well worth doing. If the sump shows any signs of debris, you will know that something is wrong with the gearbox and you have to schedule an overhaul. You can see how the car performs after the Tranny oil and Tranny filter change. Good luck Omar |

Some new info for the tech gurus. While waiting for a appointment at dealer had to drive today and as a experiment decided to keep speed below 80KMH.Outcome was that 'chk gearbox' warning light stayed off for whole trip.So any ideas(hopefully not expensive ones)Cheers Nigel |

Dear Nigel, I will assume that Hong Kong is similar to Dubai, so I will advise you on what I would do if this was my car and we were in Dubai. Not everyone is an expert on everything - so i dont go close to gearboxes. I can tell you however that your gearbox needs an overhaul - you have little choice on options as a consequence. The gearox on your car is a General Motors GM400 unit that is very robust and durable. An overhaul from an American Gearbox Specialist (and there are many in Dubai) will cost me in the region of US$1,500 assuming nothing is broken. I dont think anything is broken in your box - it is probably in need of new o rings, clutches, bands, seals etc and a good clean. Phone a few of these gearbox specailists and get a quote for an overhaul. You will get two prices for a GM400 gearbox overhaul - a price for any American car that uses the box, and a "slightly different" price for a Rolls-Royce / Bentley. Good luck. Omar |

OK last update.New gearbox installed and the pesky 'check gearbox'light' is off.I managed to purchase a brand new gearbox from the UK that with shipping was cheaper than doing a overhaul here in Hong Kong even at a Indie garage. So big smile and lower fuel bills.......... |
