Hello, I'm new to the forum and was hoping someone could help me with some advice on my 1990 Turbo R. The car has started and run fine for the 5 months I've owned it, but two days ago I had a no start situation. The starter engaged and cranked the engine over nicely, but would not start. I pulled a plug lead and found no spark whilst cranking. I then noticed that when the ignition key is turned one click to the run position that the rev counter would bounce around at about 500rpm, even though the engine was not being cranked! I pulled the HT leads from both coils and checked for a spark, to my surprise as soon as I turned the key to the run position both HT leads were sparking furiously without the engine even being cranked over! The coils are obviously being triggered to spark by the ECU even though there is no crankshaft rotation. I was suspecting an ECU problem, maybe a bad earth or power supply issue, maybe corrosion at an electrical connection? I went to the technical info section on the forum and found great info on the 30,000 series cars "major changes" for 1990, only problem is the two pages, 44 and 45, which cover the ignition system and it's self diagnostics are missing! Does any one have copies of these two pages, or any other ideas? To add to the problem yesterday morning I turned the car on and noticed the rev counter did NOT jump around, and sure enough the car started and ran perfectly. I let it get to full temperature, drove it and all was well. Went back to it an hour later and the rev counter started jumping around with the key only in the run position and again it would not start. I also noticed when it's in this no start condition in addition to the ignition coils being triggered that the cold start valve is buzzing, just like it's being triggered. I really could use the two missing pages to see if there are any codes in the ECU. Sorry for the length of the post, and thanks in advance for any help you can give. Pat Mooney. Sorrento, Florida. |

Well, after checking all connections at ECU, ignition switch, earth's etc I found a very poor connection were the engine management fuse (B9) fit's in the fuse box. I cleaned and re-tensioned the connectors, fitted a new fuse and all is well in my world now! Seems the ECU was getting a greatly reduced voltage from this poor connection and it apparently didn't like it. I hope this may help someone else in the future. Pat Mooney. |

Good to hear that! If it is a 20 amp fuse in there - change it to 25 or 30. That fuse often runs too hot and will burn out the fuse box if nothing is done about it. |
