There is an ad in the American RROC "Flying Lady" from a specialist who does this; I'll get the info for you when I get home if you are still in need. Regards, Randy |

There are people who can do this in Australia I'm told, although the one engraver I showed mine to said he wasn't confident of getting the letters sharp enough to infill neatly. The difficulty is that you have to paint over the black to get an even ground and this tends to fill in the letters. You could try carefully airbrushing and filling the letters in with Tippex but I've found all those methods tend to smudge. There are a couple of other methods - there's the sticker on ebay but the lettering doesn't seem to be the original wording.
Ther's the method suggested by Bill Coburn of getting a plastic cover made with lettering on it.
Or you can use Letraset. The only typface that comes close is Helvetica Medium Condensed 3mm white. And therein lies the rub - it's gone out of production. Sheets turn up on eBay occasionally and there is one stationer in the UK who still had supplies at least a few months ago. As in the 2 examples above the lettering is slightly thicker and you do lose the 'engraved' look. I have painted mine with Hammerite satin which is close to the original matte black. Here's one I've been practicing on while my car's away - I only used ordinary black on this. Firstly mask carefully with non stick oven paper or you'll end up with random letters everywhere you touch.
Next very carefully line up the letters using your mask and the lines on the transfer sheet; the first letter of each word is the hardest and if you've never used Letraset before try and practice getting it straight with a different sheet - don't waste the white.
If you aren't happy with a letter you can remove it with a slightly dampened toothpick and your fingernail. As per the instructions use the non stick paper to rub the letters down afterwards to make them really stick. Here's the finished one which is for a slightly earlier Shadow than mine.

I'd be very happy with that. Not easy to get right. Have a bit of a passion for old radios and trying to get some of them right is no mean feat. Don't think I've ever achieved what I felt was good enough. Near enough but not good enough. The era I found most difficult was the 50>>60's. Fancy lettering and graphics but poor printing technology. Turn to chalk so you end up with little to go on in the first place. Stefan |

Probably the only thing you could do in that situation Stefan is to try and find an old advertisment with the logo on it and get a printer to make you up an appropriately sized sticker or transfer - trouble is they tend to like large orders - and you still wouldn't get the 'raised' lettering look of the originals. Do you collect catalin radios? The price some of them fetch would be a hefty deposit on a Rolls Royce... |
