I have a '78 SSII with a cloth interior. The build sheets indicate the Fabric as being: William Playne Beige Striped Cloth TRA 60. Googling does not yield anything. Is this fabric still available and if so where? |

Hello Larry. The firm of Winterbotham, Strachan & Playne, which manufactured the fabric used in your car, was bought out in its entirety by Milliken in 1990. Hopefully the following information will yield some help for you, but please let us know how you get on. Good luck and best regards, John Milliken WSP, Lodgemore Mills, Stroud, Gloucestershire GL5 3EJ, UK. tel: +44 (0)1453 764456 fax: +44 (0)1453 752919 http://www.milliken-wsp.co.uk |

Thanks John. Their (uninformative) website mentions West of England cloth, so I have emailed them and will let you know what happens. |

Welcome Larry, Praeclarum Edition 6-93 pg 2302 describes the interior of your car as "Oatmeal". I'm not sure if that is an official name for the upholstery or a descriptive term by a previous owner. |

Thanks Mark. It definitely is oatmeal in colour. I haven't heard anything from the UK as yet. When Bill Rorriston owned the car, he phoned Crewe to get the supplier and they said that they had additional bolts of the cloth in stock (this was requested by the owner in the build sheets) and they sent the fabric out to Bill. It was enough to recover the seat backs and squab, but not the bases, the doors or the roof. |

Larry, If you try contacting Milliken or Playnes they will deny that they now manufacture seat quality West of England cloth. However, Hirsh Auto in the USA has special production runs of this material to the origianl specifications. Contact: - www.hirschauto.com They will send swatches to choose the colour and will ship worldwide in a matter of days - fantastic company to deal with. Not only that, the prices are incredibly reasonalble. If you telephone direct, ask to speak to Bill Hirsch and he will deal with the order personally because it is from overseas. Larry, Stephe is absolutely right -- I don't know where my head was. Also, if you send Hirsch a small snip of your fabric, they will send you the closest matches they have. Remember that when you order, you will want to have cuttings from the various different dye lots so you can get the closest possible match. Good luck! |

Cloth is differcult to match. IF you were to say repair the front seat by using the rear seat cloth it won't match due to fading. This means that it is differcult to repair unless whole seats are done. Differcult but not impossible. For small repairs try a SMART repair, Car Dealers will have a contact. SMART ----small area repair technics If the whole car needs doing then any car trim shop should be able to match the cloth both in colour and quality. If this is the case then also consider leather because the amount of work is about the same and I suspect that the price will be as well. Shadows with cloth interiors are not liked in the UK and are valued accordinly--- less. Having the wrong cloth fitted providing it is of appropiate quality and correctly done will not devalue the car---- anyway how would anybody be able to tell it was not quite right bearing in mind that I have only seen 1 Shadow that had cloth.

Hello all, very interesting topic. Bob is of course quite correct; the UK market is conditioned to regard leather as the 'premium' option. However, disregarding residual/resale values, I would order cloth as the preferred option. It is more comfortable, warmer in winter, quieter when leather has hardened over time and (for us blokes) doesn't shine your strides! Finally, remember the Queen can have what she likes- cost no object- and has cloth for her use where, I think, the chauffeur puts up with leather. Cloth for comfort, leather for footballs.
