Good morning Admin. Thank you for accepting me. Looking for Tech. help. A bit of a back story though. I recently purchased a 1971 Shadow from Adelaide and drove it back to Perth (2700 Kms). Had a few minor issues driving over, but nothing noteworthy. When I picked the car up, they had just driven it to put petrol in for me. I must say I was disappointed as I wanted to witness a cold start. Never mind, 48 hours later arrived home, pockets very empty as fuel across the Nullabor was nearly $3 per litre. Days later, after recovering, I went to move the car (first time cold), the engine started first crank, and the RPM was excessive (1500 -2000 rpm). I`m quite sure the linkage is NOT binding or sticking, as when the engine starts, the linkage does not move, Ive even back-off the idle stop screw. I have removed both dampers, checked the needle valves and seats. The fuel level appeared slightly high with needle jets removed, & the RH carby was flooding when ignition. Checked float bowl needle valves, both clean and Viton seat type. But also noted float had a minimal amount of fluid in. However, float height was about 11mm. Reset both to 13mm. Retried start, but still idle speed raced. Removed dampers again, fuel level in jet still quite high. Reset float feight to 15mm, Retried starting, speed raced away again. I'm confident sure its not chock-related or linkage; it almost seems like an air leak after the butterfly plates. I did try spraying the vacuum hoses and manifold with 'start ya bastard' but revs remained high. I started the car and put in drive (engine nearly came through the bonnet) and took it for a drive until hot. Choke system came off, but revs did not drop. In drive at idle the car does about 20 kph! Any help gratefully received.

Have you re-seated the butterfly valves by loosening the spindle clamps and making sure they are fully closed. One or both may have slipped. You will need to remove the air horns or the dampers to get access.

Many years ago I had a similar fault, turned out to be one of the stove pipes corroded and holed.Made up a new pipes and still running ok with LPG fast idle startups and long running trips.
